I think what he did was photoshop out the color, as in de-saturating everything but the water.
However he did it, though, it looks amazing

very skillfully done. It would be interesting to see it the other way round, i.e. only black and white in the puddle, just out of curiosity! Perhaps the sky could be darker so that the puddle becomes more of a contrast. Then again that might look shite, just a suggestion! Good work anyway!

I've been playing around with mixing color and greys for a while now, and I find that a small amount of grey in a colored image is very ineffective. The color, surrounded by the grey, really attracts the eye and, as mentioned below, adds a cold atmosphere to the image.

It was getting cold out when I took the picture, the sun had just gone behind the mountains, but the original image didn't really show that. I think the black and white really brought it out.
