I love this pic. But I think Loki had a more personal reason in the Avengers. I have to say at the beginning of the Avengers, Loki looked 'worse' than I'd ever seen him. Dark circles under the eyes, beads of sweat on the brow. And that conversation with the Chtauri leader. I think Loki was in 'over his head'. But he wouldn't tell Thor that!

Well... both brothers are royal members of a race dedicated to battle and warfare, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that their upbringing laid some of the groundwork for their later actions. Lol.
