I looked down at the concrete under my battered sneakers. I knew I could trust her. I made a promise to confide in her from then on. I couldn't break that promise. "Right. I'll let you know... Gracie. I... There's been something I've been thinking about... But, I'm not sure how to say it. I... well--"

I suddenly felt Gracie closer than she had ever been to me, her lips meeting my own, her arms wrapped tight around my neck. I felt utterly shocked, so shocked that I dropped the bag of suckers on the ground and stood frozen, one hand clenched in a fist in my pocket, the other open after dropping the candy bag.

She pulled back, still hugging me. "I know, Alex. You don't have to say anything, I already figured it out. I know you better than that. I'll see you tomorrow at school, alright?"

I still stood still, as if frozen in a state of shock. "Uh, yeah. I'll-I'll see you then.")
