I heard that the Balrog were actually more powerful than Sauron.

Well, to put it basically, they are of the same divine race as Sauron, and even Gandalf and the Istari: the maiar/maia. When Melkor aka Morgoth began his conquest of what would be middle earth, he turned several maiar over to his side, and turned them to evil. The Balrogs are the end result. It's pretty much no different from how he turned Sauron over to evil. Though i have no doubts they maybe WERE stronger than he before he forged the one ring, i believe it's their leader Gothmog who holds that honor. Seeing as how he held equal rank to Sauron in Morgoth's army. So it's probably true that before the second age, they may have been stronger than Sauron. Now, i imagine, they may rival each other in power with Sauron wielding the One Ring.

That is certainly a scary thought, a Ring-powered Sauron being on par with a Balrog.

Yes, it is. And is possibly how he held dominion over middle earth before the ring was cut from his hand.

"Something was coming up behind them. What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it."

And quite literally, since the Balrog race is of demonic origins which Gandalf classifies Durin's Bane rightfully so.....since they're actual demons, and such.
