Description Back in the 1970’s Japanese television was dominated by all kinds of superhero’s from the Ultraman series, the Kamen Rider’s and the Super Sentai shows, but one of the most interesting shows that was introduced 1978 was the release of Toai’s own version of Marvel’s most famous and iconic hero.

Following the story of Takuya Yamashiro, (not Peter Parker) a young motocross driver how gains spider powers from a device called the Spider Bracelet (not a radioactive spider) and a giant robot called Leopardon.

With these and other devices Takuya becomes, and I quote “The Emissary of Hell, Spider-Man”.

He fights against a fleet of alien invaders called “The Iron Cross Army”, led by the evil “Professor Monster”, how seeks to continue in his per-suit of immortality and conquer the earth with alien foot soldiers and monsters.

The series may have had a very silly plot, even for the 70’s but was very well received and ran for 1978-1979 with over 41 episodes, a movie and did better than Americans live action series around the same time, and has been appearing a lot in recent years and may even show up in this summer Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse.

Fun fact: This was Toai first series to use the concept of heroes needing to summon a mecha to fight against a monster after it become’s enlarged.

This would later be of course be used in the Super Sentai series after words, which would lead to the birth of the Megazords in the Power Ranger franchise.
