Here's the thing about Satomi Ishihara who plays this character, there is no denying that she is smoking hot and a very charming actress in Shin Godzilla, but for me she strangely ended up being a sort of comic relief. For one thing she is very much Anno's "Misato" character for this film, and if you've ever watched his Neon Genesis Evangelion series you know what I'm referring to. She's the mature, sassy smart woman who has her own agenda, but it's a positive agenda. Also her scenes of English were very charming, I give her all the credit for the effort but sometimes it was just amusing. My personal favorite was when they zoomed in on her clenching fist and she growled, "YESSS!" Great stuff.
The real kicker though was the subplot about her wanting to be an American president in her future. I'm all for a good woman president, don't get me wrong, but the idea of a woman with an English accent as thick as hers being elected to the highest office in our land was about as funny to me as the scene in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah where they explained how in the future Japan started buying up other countries and became the world's greatest economic superpower. I'm sure it's a fun idea to entertain if you're Japanese and have strong national pride, but in the world of realities it comes off a little funny over on this side of the pond. Still, all the credit to Miss Ishihara for being a wonderful actress, a fun character and another great character to honor in our little series.
