I went ahead and looked up the show and ... I was overwhelmed by the weirdness of anime hitting me. I thought I saw every bizarre curve-ball that anime could throw but I guess not.
Now I'm trying not to get sucked in. I thought of something very, very similar many years ago only it was with WWI biplanes with my class and classmates competing against other schools.

Indeed, people often call 'GuP' an anime version of 'WoT'.
I even saw several mods for 'WoT' with textures from 'Girls und Panzer'. It looked hilarious.
