I've met Kain in the Blood Omen games for first, noticed the first game you play from the series defines the character preference, so when I got to the Soul Reaver series I couldn't connect it to the Blood Omens, neither it's characters (actually the SR games turned to be an entirely different game with the Legacy title slapped on it). The fans of the SR games see it the other ways around but the differences between the two series clearly show.Β
Of course Kain was originally created for Blood Omen, he's a contradicting "villainous protagonist", a sardonic, cnicidal person in a cynicidal world. The original Nosgoth also wasn't a world where you could divide it's people to goods and bads as neither Kain, nor his enemies were good or evil, they were all selfish and cared with their own good. Kain either didn't killed them of moral reasons (as he admitted he knew nothing about Nupraptor for example).
The world of the Soul Reaver is more two-dimensional where the vampires are almost ethereal angelic creatures and humans and hylden are all dumb and bad. It's protagonists work for the saving of their world and have moral reasons that justify their kills. Haha the Hulk is a fitting definition on Mr. Greeno (I call it the Green Orc) that creature is more like a wizard with a fatherly care to Raziel, really compating it to Kain there aren't a single matching points with the Blood Omen's character. I can spot more things in common with Yoda but not with Kain.Β
True, Kain is clever, cunning, never lies and always does everything face to face but never playes the wizard hiding in the background manipulating others to do the dirty job. Also the fatherly behaviour is not him, Crystal Dynamics were afraid of the marketability of a character like Kain and didn't meant to keep him when they took over the Legacy of Kain title.
He's quite an extraordinary character, I like painting him, also the old graphics giving a lot of freedom in interpretation Β

I completley agree with you on this .
But it's not the only Game that this happened too.
If you know Tomb Raider, you know what I mean.
I loved the Games 1 - 6 , they have been Amazing. Since Tomb Raider was going to Crystal Dinamic's it's just not the same.
It's still playable, but I don't get that awesome feeling playing it, I used to get in the past.
It's different now. I can't see much of Lara's Personality in the new Lara.
The Look / Graphic is okay, but the Story does'nt attract me like the older one's.
Also have you seen Raziel look's a little bit like a zombie Version of classic Croft XD?? It's fu***** funny XD.Β
Hulk looked cool but it is not Kain anymore. The Whole personality is changed.
So for Kaim himself, I really prefer the old look. It's more Badass too .
I started with blood omen 2 to be honest XD. And I saw that badass Vampire, and I loved it.Β
It really is a game that amazes me and that I like. My Fiance showed it to me, he lend me all the games. I've tried all of them.Β
And I prefer the Blood Omen Games
Also I think I like his Character because he is different from almost any other Game.
I am a Fan of Lovestories for example. But this Game could pull it off without one. Wich is Amazing. Not many Games manage to do that.
It is very different from 70 % of the Other Games I have seen and played, and it stuck on my Memory.
I see you like Painting him and that's very cool. Also I agree with the older Graphic's. You can use or imagination more, and that is a very fun thing to do

Tomb Raider was my first ever videogame and as such it's my all time favourite. I can only agree, Crystal's version is a weak attempt to ride the success of the classics. Maybe the graphics got way better but the gameplay became dull and straight forward and Lara herself isn't anymore that cold-blooded treasure hunter. She became a sentimental mary sue-ish weak person, her naivity was terribly annoying in Legend. Crystal's maniac "making a character real" by overcomplicated tragic backstories isn't a winning business at all, with this plane crash, losing a mom and gaining an Atlantean goddess as the Croft family's arch enemy is just trying too hard. The classics had way simplier stories but those were the better.Β
And here's this new survival genre of game, I don't call it a bad piece but wouldn't call it Tomb Raider. Crystal must be a coward company if they have to hide their new releases behid the titles of once great franchishes to ensure a good selling and don't dare releasing a game under a not yet known title.Β
Not only Raziel's look but the whole SR games feel like the zombie version of Lara's games, SR uses the same puzzles, acrobatics, and locations, really playing SR is a deja-vu for a Tomb Raider fan.Β
The Greenie-Green is a random antagonist from Shifter, this was a planned angel-themed game with Raziel, the fallen angel on revenge in the main role. It was an independent project, not related to Legacy of Kain until Crystal slapped this title onto it so this whole "Kain got older and evolved" blah-blah is a weak excuse to cover the obvious, it's the character of a different game, never meant to be sold as Kain. Maybe I wouldn't dislike the creature in it's original context but as it is forced down on the gamers' throat as Kain I just can't stand this character, neither Raziel.Β
I'm your opposite, I don't like romances (rather being a horror and sci-fi fan in first place) I hesitated a lot about buying Blood Omen 2 (it was my first Kain game too) because of previous bad vampire stories experiences (Anne Rice *shivers*) but it turned to be an entirely different stuff from the usual horny coffin-sleeper vampire stories and was a great choice to buy it. It needs no romances, I can rather relate it to Rune by Humanhead and Kain was more like a norse warrior than a genreic vampire. Also liked a lot he behaved different from the usual game heroes, he was cynicidal, was bad and he didn't intended to redeem himself with "good deeds", although he was out of character when Umah died (why the hell he said that rubbish queen-line) it was great he killed her. In other games the hero always gets moved by the begging of their injured enemy and show mercy, but Kain doesn't. And he didn't lied about it to Vorador.
I found so far the Witcher similar to Kain, Geralt of Rivia is almost the same sardonic outcast, but have to admit I got deeply disappointed in his character for that Yennefer relationship, that woman made him forgot how to be tough, cold-hearted and cynicidal.

I was happy too when Angel of Darkness was released but for me it wasn't what I expected from a Lara game, that's the only TR game by Core I never beaten. It was really full of bugs and glitches and got hopelessly stuck in the streets and sewers level in Paris and didn't started over the game since then.Β
I think those alternative games "Guardian of Light" and whatever the hell it's 2nd installment called are the worst, I didn't played them, the gameplay videos already told enough these games are a big waste of time.Β
Sometimes gamers and fans can be really brainless when they eat the companies' blah-blah about character developement when the case is actually about releasing a random new game under a well-known and popular title because they don't dare risking the selling rate with an unknown title. Just as Soul Reaver is Shifter and not Legacy of Kain, and the 2013's Tomb Raider is rather Teen G.I.Jane or Let's Rescue Sam than Tomb Raider.Β
Kain is the only "evil" protagonist so far I've met in videogames, he's damn sticking out of the usual game heroes, even if his 2 games are already old it was a blast to play them. It's good and bad the same time Kain remained a pending property, bad as Blood Omen can never get a proper remake or a GOG release, but good as he's prevented from Crystal's reboots that'd probably meant the complete destroying of Silicon Knights' Kain and the readapting of the character and story in a Soul Reaver fashion.Β
That's true, insert a women by the side of a badass main character and he's not going to be a badass anymore. Yennefer made Geralt lose everything he was likeable for, his cynicism and the cool emotionless attitude was gone and got replaced with the genreic dumb man in love thing to the level of self-humiliation, as if Yennefer had castrated him. I rather appreciated Geralt's occasional nights with random women with no emotional bounds and the "one true lover" stuff. Geralt isn't the man of soft and tender feelings so all that Yennefer represented made him out of character.Β
Yes the Seer was okays, she visibly wanted Kain for a night but probably would kicked him out in the morning, she didn't needed him and vica-versa from Kain's part, he's not the man of relationships. Umah is the opposite of the Seer, she tried to seduce Kain and move him around like a puppet. He was just awaken from a coma with a weak body and shattered memories when Umah taunted him to take revenge and claim dominance over Nosgoth as his reward then she took a 180Β° turn at the Wharves when she betrayed him to claim the victory over the sarafan lord to herself. SHe also manipulated Vorador, he didn't gave much about his brides before, if they got killed then they got killed, who cares, but for an odd reason he paid a special importance to Umah.

I Agree that Angel of Darkness is very hard to play! You sure need a Loooooot of Β patience to complete it. I have completed it 3 Times. But it was very hard. Especially the first time. There have been Level's where I used to stuck for month's!!!
I still love it tho.
And I agree with the Guardian of Light stuff, that is really no tomb raider XD. I did'nt play it either.
Yes, I think some gamer's and fan's don't WANT to see it. Deep inside they know it , but they try to push those fact's aside.
Assassins Creed for example is changing too. I Love the new Versions also, but I really understand if Fan's of the Classic's get upset. I really understand them. I get upset over what happened to Lara too.
Oh yes a Remake of LoK would have been Awesome!!! But not by Crystal Daynamic's. They would ruin it.
Very much true yes. In our book we try the best to keep the character's personality.Β
A Character should not change so much, because of love. He can change a bit, but not like "he's becoming a whole new person" I would not like that.
IF someone, loves the other, they would take him or her for what he/she is right ?
But I agree Kain is not the type for a Relationship. And that is okay. Not every damn Game Character need's a Relationship XD.
It is not a bad thing if they have, but their Personality shound stay .
Yes Umah was a Manipulator.
So yes I think too she deserved what she got.
I wish she would have had a little cooler Personality, and that she would have not lied to Kain.
(With that I mean she would not have needed to become his wife or something like that, but she could have been a cool character Assissting him on some Mission's. Well but the Developers wanted her otherwise and made her a little annoying XDD)
Poor Vorry, losing his wife with the biggest breast. Of course he was sad

That's the big advantage of big size work I can put a lot of details into it. The background was partly inspired by the hylden design, but I put a lot of biomechanical stuff into it, made the small details random without pre-designing and gave them details when I was pleased with the concept.Β

Very nice! That costume was always spectacular and I like your take on it. What do you think of the costume, both original and your reproduction? I've always been curious about the peacock 'or arguably a dragon' design as it applies to Kain. I could guess the Batman-style gauntlet scallops are to help him block attacks unarmed. I've always liked the ridiculous spurs on the boots. They aren't for making a horse run faster, but to slaughter it for a snack.
How did you decide on the articulation of the neck guards? I remember in the game, they just bent out of the way of his head, but you seem to make them attached to and moved by his shoulders. I could understand them being a pain to plan as they're so big and mostly in the way of his face.
There is a thing that's always puzzled me. Why would he wear such decorated heavy armor that seems to be made of bronze for the final fight? He is going up against their biggest guys, one of whom has his magic sword. His strategy shouldn't be to resist blows, but to dodge them. Even the giant swords that aren't the Soul Reaver are going to make short work of any armor, especially the parade costume he chose to wear. Maybe he needed more of a challenge, as if those factors, working with vampires, crossing a bloodless ocean, and recovering his artifact from the guy who beat him up for it, were not enough of a challenge.

Sometimes I don't mind functionless wear in fantasy games or artwork as long as they're stylish and not over the top. I like Boris Vallejo's women dressed into metal bikinis or metal bodysuit that would never work in real or the rusty domina wears nailed to the body on Brom's art, they're adding to the expressivity of the work and also fitting the character. (But don't like the mismatching combinations such as in WoW art when skinny boobarellas wearing heavy shoulder and armguards their weak bodies would broke under but wearing almost nothing on the rest of their bodies)Β
I liked this armour of the guy, slim-fitted and flexible at the bends that allows him moving freely with lots of spikes for a stylish look though the whole thing wouldn't work in real. Reminds me a bit to his chaos armour that was another wear to be noticed in.Β
The neck guards didn't bent in the game, maybe he didn't wanted to recieve the same treatment he gave to others when grabbed people by their neck and looped their heads off with a single move.Β
Guess the design of his wear got changed according to the toughness of the enemies, he barely worn anything for defense in the first chapter to fight with thugs, changed it for a textile suit with metal guards for the aristocratic upper city to beat up light armoured knights then dressed into a hunter style leather wear for the canyons and wrapped himself into metal to fight heavy armoured knights and those also spiked hylden (funny, they dressed like Gollum and were at the toughness level of the heavy armoured knights)
