Description Telperion, the Silver Tree of Light, endured throughout the Years of the Trees, but came to an end during the terrible event known as the Darkening of Valenor. Valenor, once part of the world, was closed off to all but the elves. Telperion, also known as Silpion and Ninquelótë , had dark silvery leaves whose silvery dew was collected as water and light. During the dark period Telperion was chopped down by Melkor and Ungoliant and drank to death... but Telperion produced one silver flower before dying giving birth to the moon.

And as a special treat for fellow Tolkein fans...a poem translated into Elvish...

I-'wathrad Balannor
The Darkening of Valinor by Ellen Brundige

I-'wathrad Balannor
The Darkening of Valinor
A! Tollen gûr na Balannor
Nu goll dhúath e nathron dhonn
Onethelais panna i nôr
Gelaidh gelaid go linnod an
Nestad. Ai nae úamdir dâr.

O! Come is death to Valinor
Under shadowy cloak of the dark weaver.
Yavanna fills the place
of the Trees of Light with a chant for
Healing. Ah alas, no hope remains.

Harnannin athan nestad bân
Telperion a Laurelin.
In edhil sí awarthar Dhûn
Farol i viriath corin
E galad vedui o Aman.

Wounded beyond all healing
Are Telperion and Laurelin.
The elves there depart the west
Seeking the jewels made
From the last light of Aman.

I aear dholl. Saer dîn vanadh.
Aphadar 'lîn e-fast i chîn
Finarfin. Athradar athrad
Chelegnen. Sí falas thrúnen.
I ithil eria. Romru cân.

The sea is dark. Bitter their fate.
They follow the gleam of the hair of the children
Of Finarfin. They cross the icy
Passage. There is the eastern shore.
The moon rises. Trumpets ring out.

Your Japanese arts are so beautiful. I wish I could paint like You
It is only a tree and the moon, but there is a great emotional charge. I Love it.

Thank you...I imagined that this is what it would look like. I did appreciate the movie version rendering of it...but somehow thought it would look more delicate. I am glad you like this depiction.

yes, I have been told this many times before. It is not intentional although I will happily admit that I most enjoy the minimalist qualities of many asian artists as well as the muted colour palette. I draw inspiration from that.

There is beauty in sadness. Not all beauty must be happy. I love grey melancholy days, they have their own poetry. If it were not for sadness, we would not enjoy happiness so much.

Another wonderful painting. You are one of the few artists that manage to get the real mythical feeling of Tolkien's works- probably because you know how to use the rule "less is more". I'm looking forward to more work from you, keep it up!

kaiorton In reply to azraelslo [2005-12-06 00:42:13 +0000 UTC]

what a nice compliment. I am glad that you like the style with which I have rendered these pieces. I don't do fan art really, but I have always been inspired by Tolkeins vision and writing. I am glad to have you in my audience. It makes all the difference on DA to have people who give thoughtful comments and criticism. Much appreciated, I will return the favor.

Hehe, I try to give fair comments
And I definitely think that this is much more than simply a fanart ( which is the plague of deviantart! ). I can also say that I am inspired by Tolkien, especially by the sense of nostalgia in his writings- nostalgia of a place which resides in our deepest dreams (if that makes sense).
