Title and concept from a song by (don't laugh) Aqua. Somehow it put the image for Kumaro as a merman in my brain, which I doodled and liked, so I then drew this - Daniel (who can't swim) has just been in a shipwreck, and MerKuma has swum over to see what all the commotion is. This is just before he pulls Daniel's face to his, bringing their mouths together so that he can perform a sort of rescue breathing.

I made this up. ^^ By taking a very deep breath of water and swallowing the liquid, the merfolk can exhale nearly pure oxygen. Whoever is breathed for in this manner usually passes out soon, waking up with a nasty headache and sore throat, but it's better than drowning. The merfolk also have the ability to become human for short periods of time, generally to avoid being trapped in tidepools or revealed to humankind. But if they stay that way for longer than three days, Permanence sets in, a painful process that prohibits them from ever returning to the sea.

Daniel wakes up on a mostly deserted island with a very attractive redhead - Kumaro. He didn't have enough time underwater to register the earfins, so he doesn't know Kuma's merkin. Yet.
