Born almost immediately before The Incident, Papyrus was barely a babybones when W.D. Gaster began to throw himself completely into his role as king and his actions against the humans. Due to Gaster’s disinterest in his youngest brother, a monster who was close to the skeleton brother’s parents offered to care for the young babybones, including Sans. Gaster conceded this, and Papyrus and Sans grew up under Grillby.
Once Papyrus and Sans became older and more ‘able’, Gaster took them back into the castle. Due to Sans seemingly being more ‘like Gaster’ than Papyrus, he began to be groomed as the future king. However, Gaster completely disregarded Papyrus, seeing his younger brother as a ‘less intelligent’ version of himself, and as thus let the young and sweet skeleton do his own thing with little interest in actually getting to know him. Sans became agitated at this, and began to sabotage his own training in order to spend time with his younger brother. One day, Papyrus and Sans were training with their magic in one of the city’s training grounds when Gaster decided to observe them. To his surprise, his youngest brother’s magic was quite powerful, perhaps even up to par with his own and Sans’. After this, Gaster announced Papyrus’ rank as the new Head of the Royal Defense, a position which forced a monster to proposely attack and kill humans to ‘protect’ monsters. To Gaster’s annoyance, Papyrus was actually pacifistic by nature, and never killed any humans and instead gave them MERCY. This was the beginning of a rocky relationship between all three brothers.
