Ooh, blood, but they're tattoos, what do you expect? I did this because, one, I like tattoos and airbender tattoos intrigue me, and two, I hadn’t seen anything done on this subject. Watercolor is SO not my medium, but everything else seemed “heavy” for an Air Temple scene, if that makes sense.Medium: Crayola Watercolors.

i'd always thought that they might meditate whilst they get their tattoos so they don't feel anything, cause some ppl can actually do that

In some tribal cultures they traditionally create tattoos by first cutting designs into the skin and rubbing the resulting wound with ink, I'm guessing that the Air Nomads did the same thing. I'm also guessing that they used sharpened sticks or animal bones for their tattooing tools which resembled small needles, maybe they looked like porcupine quills?
Also I always thought that Aang's tattoos were closer to scarification than regular tattoo's like the markings were carved into his skin but that's just a guess

I thought they magically appeared imagine a 12 year old going through that.....yeah they do magically appear when they make up a new trick or whatever they have to do to get them

Im intrigued by this image, It made me think, if a modern tattoo hurts alot imagine how one of the air bender tattoos feel, ouch! Faved.

What exactly is that thing the tattoo artist is running against Aang's back?

I can't be certain as I'm not the Artist of this, but long ago before modern inventions for tattooing were invented, and especially for tribal tattoos in Asia they used to use a stick (like above) with needles on the end and prick the skin repeatedly until the die which they have also on the stick's end is absorbed enough to stay there. Basically exactly how tattoos are done now, but a lot slower and much more painful. As they didn't have machines to work the needles as fast as we do now.

Brilliant! I have been looking for someone to depict this and you've done an awesome job of it.
I had imagined that the tattooing process would be a really spiritual moment for the airbenders, sort of embodying all of the detachment from mortal life that they preach. I also imagined it would be incredibly painful and would have been a traumatic and crystallizing experience, especially as it was done to children at a young age.
I'd love to see the scene where Aang tells Katara about the experience, it would just be perfect with her compassionate nature and would just make her even more protective of him.

I thought about whether Aang had to go through that, but I'd thought that maybe he had his tattoos painted on. I don't know what the particular ink is called or what it's made of, all I know is it's permanent. My dad has 'em, so I thought that's what Aang had. ...the poor kid T-T.
I do agree with BeigeTapsBlondeCurls that Aang have the situation look much more painful, but since it's AANG here and I love the kid, I'm gonna assume that the monks were at least kind enough to spread the areas with novocaine, morphine or a safe combination of the two

Don't you think the tattoos could be another process of becoming an Airbending master? I think so because it's so much skin and tattoos are painful enough. Heck, piercing ears can be painful.

GAH I saw this picture a while back when I first got into Avatar, and then forgot about it, then remembered it when I just recently became re-obsessed with Avatar, and I've been trying to find this picture for two weeks!

This is a nice picture. I especially like the tear in Aang's eye.
And to answer everyone else who wondered, yes they are tattoos and not birth marks. Aang was the youngest air bender ever to receive them. They mention it in an episode. That is why Aang's friends don't have them.
