"I just want you to know I'm not having fun anymore." Jakobi seethed, taking the obnoxious bay stallions reins. In exchange for Keke riding in the Six Bar class and both Puissance classes the blond man had been coerced into riding Zen in Speed Derby and he was already regretting it. Jakobi was a Grand Prix rider by trade and no matter how much he tried he could never get comfortable with the dizzying heights that came along with Puissance so despite Coda formally being his horse to ride he'd turned over the reins, choosing her terrible older brother as the lesser of two evils.

As a show of good faith Keke had warmed the stallion up but now that it was time to go Jakobi was forced to take over. The snow had stopped falling and had immediately been cleared out of the arena and off the jumps so it would be a considerably smoother course than the Grand Prix was but Zen being Zen did not give a single fuck about the conditions. Having originally been trained as a Cross Country mount meant he was going to do whatever it took to get around the course as fast as possible, unfortunately making him the perfect Speed Derby horse.

Rubbing the horses face as Jakobi hesitantly stuck his foot in the stirrup, Keke smirked. "Just think of him as a young Moole but without the constant temper tantrums. You know what I think he's actually older than Moo was when you took over so this should be better. He's maturing into a fine young man that you should be proud to deal with."

"When I die I hope they charge you with manslaughter." Jakobi said flatly, gathering the reins and shifting in the saddle. "I don't doubt that he's a good horse but I do not deserve this and if it wasn't too late I would make you trade me for Savina again."

Keke waved his hand nonchalantly, stepping back as the horse and rider began a slow walk around him. "Savina is much much worse than Zen, she does you no favors and absolutely wants you dead whereas this big baby just thinks you're along for the ride and he's the one running the show. Which he is so good luck. The key is to just point him in the general direction of the jump, you'll hear the 'beep beep beep' as he locks in on his target and then you just need to hold on because angle and distance don't matter at 30 miles an hour."

"Yeah I remember him taking off from like 6 feet back the first year-"

"Yes and we won so get used to it."

"You have really never dealt with a decent horse have you, there's never been a kindly schoolmaster in your life you just went straight to actual demons."

"You know god damn well I went straight to actual demons." Keke grinned as Jakobi rolled his eyes, pushing Zen into a trot and widening the circle. "Besides they're trying to breed some niceness into them this season so in like 10 years we'll have some downright angels to ride. Unless the Moole-ness overpowers them and we end up with even worse horses."

Jakobi winced, bringing Zen back to a walk as the first Speed Derby entrant left the arena. "The Moole-ness is definitely going to overpower some of these crosses, especially if it's our mares raising them." He paused as Keke nodded slowly, both men wincing slightly once more as they thought of Moole's dam Sonja, who was originally credited as the one who soured the bloodline, and of Zen's dam Mirage who was nothing more than a straight up bitch. "I'm honestly more than a little disappointed they haven't found a nice calm mare for Zen, I want to see how this ordeal of a stallion produces so maybe we can stop risking our lives showing him."

"Careful what you wish for," Keke warned, patting the stallions shoulder as the duo was called to the gate. "We wanted to see how Moole produced too and the answer was 'crazier horses than himself'. Just focus on surviving this show and we'll go from there. Remember, after this class you're free and you don't even have to think about Zen until next year, you can go back to nice calm Coda."

"Thank god there's a light at the end of the tunnel." Jakobi deadpanned, buckling his helmet as Zen practically quivered in anticipation, realizing it was nearly his turn. "As long as I survive this I'll be happy, I don't even care about placings at this point."

"Yeah and don't forget about the added pressure of him already having won this class." Keke called after them, leaning on the fence as the two entered the arena to officially begin their round. The pair maintained a decent working canter for a few strides before Zen tired of being polite and grabbed the bit, immediately rocketing towards the first jump in his normal 'large and in charge' style.
