Description

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh C'thulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.

(In his house at R'lyeh dead C'thulhu waits dreaming.)

This year, I carved Cthulhu from H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. I used my own pattern. It took seven hours to prepare and carve the pumpkin.

On Cheezburger/Memebase , I just received the highest compliment that you can get: "I'm beginning to suspect that a significant percent of these cool pumpkin carvings I've seen on internet are 'shopped. Not that I don't think they're possible, but that just doesn't look real."

Thanks! It's sitting on my porch, decaying a little every day.

The elder pumpkin has come!    Nice work.  Isn't it shocking how much time these
kind of pumpkins take?

This was probably my most time-consuming carve yet. (Getting the cut-out pieces out of the forehead without collapsing the design was a challenge. I also had to rinse it several times while scoring just to see what I was doing.)

Nerve wracking right?  After about 2-3 hours in to a project you start to think: "I can't screw this up now!"  Anyway,
I just looked at your other pumpkins and they are amazing.  Well done!

It is! It's interesting to watch my thought process as I go through the process of carving. When I make the pattern, I am very confident. When I see the transferred lines on the pumpkin, I'm convinced the whole thing is going to be an irredeemable mess. This continues as I score the flesh off of the more complex parts. I am never sure that it looks good until it's done and I light it up.

Thanks! I really enjoyed carving it. It didn't turn out quite as well as I'd hoped -- I had to simplify the pattern to prevent the whole forehead from collapsing -- but I am reasonably satisfied with it.
