You have it backwards - re-read the end of the novel.

I actually never read it yet; a friend told me the ending the way I drew it here, so it's not my misinterpretation.

To be honest, Arthas killing Ner'zhul and himself (essentially) seems really unimaginative on Blizzard's part, in my opinion. Seems to me that they just want to kill him off.

******SPOILERS*******
To begin... it wasn't Blizzard who wrote RotLK. It was Christie Golden, with Blizzard approval.
Next, Egrem has it correct. Arthas battled Ner'zhul in their mind and came out dominant. He didn't kill himself, but he did carve out his heart so as to remove himself from all ties with his humanity. The real Arthas has been long dead, his soul sucked into Frostmourne the second he claimed it. The Lich King is, in truth, not Ner'zhul or Arthas. The Lich King is the Lich King and holds no remorse or love for either half.

-MOAR SPOILERSSSS-
the good Arthas wasnt 100% dead... a part of him was still alive and hold the scourge back from destroying azeroth... his 'goodself' is shown in the ingame scence'The fall of the lich king'

I guess our definition of "dead" differs. He was dead in so much as that his soul no longer inhabited or controlled his body.

See, this is why I didn't like the end of Fall of the Lich King... I mean, the guy cut out his -heart- to get rid of his humanity. Tirion said he had nothing to redeem, no trace left of Arthas in him. Suddenly, we break Frostmourne and he's all waa waa for papa. Honestly, have a badass villain die with some dignity sometime. Dying breath should have been a promise that he'd be back to bring the apocalypse.

I guess that could work. It's still kind of "meh".

So, Arthas killed a representation of himself, and then killed himself, hoping that would stop the Lich King? ... Great story, the WoW people made.
