It's a combination of
1. The lens and the fact that it was the equivalent of 480mm of magnification with the sun. Not a good idea to look through an optical viewfinder at really any focal length but never when you are magnified on it.
2. The zoom lens I have does not have image stabilizing so I've found that unless its at the very least 1/1000 on the exposure time at the extreme end of a zoom shot it will be not as detailed from even very slight movements. When it does work perfectly it comes out fantastic but when it doesn't it can be seen easily. This is not the first time I have had this issue and it will not be the last.
3. I've said it for years. I swear newer camera sensors do not handle sunset photography like the older (today much rarer) CCD image sensors.
