Description A crude alt. history map of the United Provinces of Central America, which existed 1823-1838 OTL.

1821- The colonies of New Spain were recognized as independent from Spain and the First Mexican Empire was formed, which strechted from California to Northern Panama.

1823- Guatemala, along with El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaraqua, and Costa Rica, declared independence from Mexico after 2 years of violence and civil unrest. They formed the first 5 provinces of the United Provinces of Central America. Guatemala City was declared the capital.

1824- The disputed territory of Soconusco joined the UPCA as the 6th province. Growing power in Guatemala caused unrest in the other provinces.

1823-1831- The UPCA is threatened by the prospect of civil war between Guatemala and the other provinces.

1831- Thanks to support from the Central American government, the people of the isthmus of Panama established their independence from Colombia. Later that year, Panama was annexed by the UPCA. This gave the people of the UPCA a greater sense of nationality and helped to strengthen the country.

1831-1834- Great Briatin claimed settlements of eastern Guatemala for the British Empire but the claim was never recognized.

1834- Central American forces took control of all British settlements and rejected the local claim for independence. Instead they established the new province of Belize to avoid insurrection.

1838- The people of the Altos Highlands in Guatemala established the new province of Los Altos. Origionally opposed by the governemt in Guatemala City, Los Altos was supported by the other provinces of the UPCA. Civil unrest continued to grow between Guatemala and the 7 other provinces.

1840- The people of Central America demanded for the capital to be moved from Guatemala to another province. Because it couldnt be decided which province the capital would be relocated to, a new province called Izabal was created. The city of Livingston was declared the new capital and civil war was avoided.

1841- The people of the Yucatan Peninsula declared their independence from Mexico. They established the Republic of Yucatan.

1842- Threat of invasion from Mexico forced the Republic of Yucatan to accept annexation to the UPCA.
