Description Decided to make some accessories for one of my models (not the Jeep, it's only there for scale comparison).

C-rations, or Combat-rations, were the standard rations of the US Army from 1938 onwards.  Packaging of C-rations came in two versions: wooden boxes, and later on cardboard boxes.  Each box, wood or cardboard, contained 48 cans, making up 8 daily rations of 6 cans - three 'B-units' containing bread and three 'M-units containing meat - which were designed to cover the daily need of a soldier.  They were also pretty unpalatable.

Despite negative feedback over the unpalatable nature of C-rations and their repetitive nature (they were supposed to be consumed for short periods only, and regularly supplemented by other types of rations), as well as complaints over the unwieldy nature of the packaged rations (one box weighed 40 lbs), C-rations became standard fare of the US Army, and were even standardised in revised versions in favour of other rations after the War as a cost-cutting measure. Issued in the original C (1938-1948), C-2 (1948-1951), C-3 (1951-1953) and C-4 form (1954-1958), they were phased out of production in 1958 in favour of MCI (Meal, Combat, Individual) rations (1958-1980), but continued to be issued from surplus stocks to frontline troops well into the Vietnam War.

...

It's hard to make them in this scale though. v_v

My grandfather has told me about having to eat these. He was in the National Guard about the time the transition was being made to MCIs. He does not seem to remember them fondly.

What material are you making these boxes out of?

The wooden crates are made with some wooden tea stirrers, and the cardboard boxes were made using some brown paper envelopes.

It's fiddly work, but not the fiddliest woodwork I've done in that scale.

This is more a UK thing I think, but "ration packs" are often abbreviated to "rat packs".

Also, their replacement, the "Meal, Ready to Eat" became better known as the "Meal, Rejected by Everyone".

And these "food" are why pretty much every soldier keeps a bottle of hot sauce in his pack!

Nice C-Rations! My own dear mother ate C-Rations for three weeks straight (my father was on maneuvers for three weeks that summer, and she didn't want to cook in the heat) back in 1976 when she was pregnant with me... so technically I've had them too! Apparently they were very old and hella salty and she still, to this day will not put salt on her food because "she had enough salt in the summer of 1976 to last her whole life".

It certainly explains why so many veterans are so well-preserved! XD

It could be all that salt pickling them in their own brine!

Thank you!

Even though they're a bit of work to model, they're not that difficult to assemble from scratch, so I've already made a few of them by now (3 cardboard ones and 12 wooden ones)...

They certainly add something to the scene.
