Description Spontin (Belgium), August 16th 2015

Locomotive "Bison" (La Meuse 3292) arrives at the Spontin station to a lot of attention.  The little industrial locomotive, built by La Meuse in Liège (Belgium) in 1928, was on a visit from the Dutch railway preservation society Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele - despite its Belgian roots, the locomotive has been in Dutch ownership ever since it was built. (as an industrial locomotive from 1928 to 1971, and as a museum locomotive since 1972).

"Bison" is one of a large number of "La Meuse" industrial locomotives which have been preserved:

La Meuse 2804 "MF 83" (1916)

La Meuse 3176 "Magda" (1925)

La Meuse 3223 "Bebert" (1926)

La Meuse 4057 "AD 08" (1950)

... to name just a few.

Almost looks like James the Red Engine. I feel so nostalgic right now...

Do bison even exist in Holland or Belgium?

They do, but they're not the species you would be familiar with.  The European Bison, or Wisent, was once a critically endangered species, though it has since been downgraded to "vulnerable" status thanks to preservation programmes.  They were reintroduced into the wild in 1951, and while "wild" herds exist in France (ca. 50, reintroduced 2005), Germany (ca. 8, reintroduced 2013) and the Netherlands (ca. 24, reintroduced 2013), there has, at present, not yet been a reintroduction of the species in Belgium.  But they are present in a number of zoos over here.

Hehe.  A wild Dutch Bison visiting from the Netherlands... :3

I've actually read about the wisent before, but I didn't realize that they existed west of Poland. Still, if their temperament is anything like American bison, it probably creates all sorts of interesting traffic problems. Just picture it: two lazy bison stop for a veggie burger in mid-migration, and tie up traffic in Bruxelles or Ypres for an hour.

I can imagine that.  After all, after the recent zebras...

If I didn't know better, I'd suggest that the camera had too much to drink and simply imagined the whole thing. But I'm not sure if electronics actually work like that.

Belgian beer isn't strong enough to cause mass hallucinations real enough to be caught on film, is it?

Depends on which beer it is.  I doubt a De Koninck (5%) could, but a Cuvée Delphine On Steroids (40%) probably could!

I kinda fear to think what a Brewmaster Snake Venom (Scotland, 67,5%) would do, though.  I doubt the camera would survive the experience!

Well, I'm a non-drinker, so I honestly wouldn't know the difference either way. Although that would make for a neat experiment - see how long an electronic device has to be soaked in a container of whiskey before it shorts out.

I guess it all depends on how well the camera has been built can take its drink...

She was a very lucky one - she went straight from retirement into preservation, unlike so many other steamers.  Of course, in the Netherlands, steam had already gone out as early as 1958 (!), so the nostalgic movement was much stronger down there than it was up here (the first preservation society only started over here in 1973, one year after "Bizon" had done her first miles in preservation in the Netherlands...)

I think it's much better if they don't linger in a scrapyard for years! Thanks for your faves Kanyiko!
