Description Brussels (Belgium), May 1st 2019

At the occasion of 150 years of Brussels Trams, the Brussels communal transport society STIB/MIVB organised a special happening with some of its historic equipment, closing one of its inner-city lines for a day.

Starting in 1934, the Tramways Bruxellois started standardising their fleet, ordering 685 uni-directional 'Standard' trams to replace their then mixed fleet of several older types, and which would become a familiar sight to the Brussels citizens for the next four decades.  Originally built with open platforms and lacking heating, these trams would be upgraded in the early 1950s to improve crew and passenger comfort.

Tram 1259 is hauling Car 2118, part of a standardised series of 416 passenger cars built between 1927 and 1931 to increase capacity on busier lines.  Like their motorised counterparts, these cars originally lacked exterior doors and heating, but were retrofitted during the early 1950s.
