Description Brussels (Belgium), May 1st 2019

At the occasion of 150 years of Brussels Trams, the Brussels communal transport society STIB/MIVB organised a special happening with some of its historic equipment, closing one of its inner-city lines for a day.

In 1935, the World's Fair was once again organised in Brussels (Belgium saw no less than 7 World's Fairs between 1897 and 1958, of which the 1897, 1910, 1935 and 1958 editions were organised in Brussels), and in anticipation of the event, a new series of high-capacity trams were ordered to provide services on the lines to the Fair's grounds.  The Series 5000 measured 15 meters in length, considerably longer than previous types, and because of this they were the first Brussels trams with bogies instead of fixed axles.  Restored to its original condition, Tram 5025 shows the type's appearance during the World's Fair, when they were mainly deployed on Lines 16 and 18 that served the grounds; following the end of the Fair in November of 1935, the type gradually spread to serve most of the Brussels network.  During a career spanning forty years, the type saw a number of technical and cosmetic changes; eventually the last of the Series 5000 was withdrawn from service in 1976.
