Description "Eywa has forsaken us"
(Unknown Na'vi)

Na’vi(‘the People’ in pandoran) are a sentient species from the planet Pandora, one of the gas giant Polyphemus’s moons in the Alpha Centauri system, and the fourth alien civilization met by mankind, in 2136.

History:
Even with the recent archeological expeditions, little is known about na’vi history in the age before human arrival, the only exceptions are the few clans who wrote/illustrated some main events of their history. The fonts shared tales about a ‘time of the great suffering’, in the past, probably the last period of clan wars. However, the most Important event in na’vi history probably happened in 2136, as humans arrived on Pandora, with the RDA Corporation given by the ICA the task to explore the unknown planet and acquire any valuable resource(the presence of a sentient race made things harder). There, humans discovered a new, amazing material, similar to the Super-Conductors that alien technology allowed them to create, but at least a hundred times more efficient, this new material was named 'Unobtanium(however nowadays, it is known as Quantium, Magnum, or Eezo)'. Willing to avoid another war like the Venusian one, humans attempted peaceful ways, until they started mining the surface…and cutting down the forest. This drove the na’vi to mistrust humans, until eventually they decided that humans were ‘unworthy to see’ and started killing them at sight. Humans answered with a ‘no more mr. nice dude’ attitude, and started killing na’vi at sight too. The events drove to the 2154 battle, where against all odds na’vi, led by the renegade mercenary Jake Sully, triumphed over humans, and forced them to get out of Pandora… however, in 2160 humans returned, with the Great Factions’s well-trained and well-equipped soldiers, deadlier weapons and new tactics. This time the na’vi didn't stand a chance, and every single resistance was quickly wiped out: for humans, the chance to defeat and humiliate an alien race after the disastrous defeats suffered at the hands of poleepkwas and ha-lyiss and the bloody tie with h’yaech and khral was more important than any ethnic/national difference. When the na’vi were on the brink of complete annihilation, the other races joined the war, and the ICA-led efforts stopped the human advance. However, the economic interests around Unobtanium was tempting for all races, luckily ICA stood for the na’vi’s right to administrate the resources of Pandora. Hence they are teaching na’vi the basics of commerce.
Despite the help ICA gave them, the defeat na’vi suffered from humans shocked them to the core, nowadays they feel like Eywa have forsaken them, and they found themselves tossed out of the world they have lived in for millenia and forced to live into a new, utterly alien, and overwhelmingly complex one. they found themselves forced to step in a modern age, forced to abandon their secular traditions and lifestyle and to suffer harassment by human propaganda, and obviously this drove many of them into depression, abuse of psychotropic subastances and crime. Many na’vi gave their children in adoption to human or other alien families, hoping that this would help them to find their way in this new era.

"The Empire understands well the struggle of these people, pandorans already have to make in a few years steps that we the Inhabitants and other races took centuries to make, it's our duty to assist this transition, we MUST share our experience and knowledge with them, so that they shall be capable of self-determination!"
(Baron Nhikssal'Qi'Alisshasii, ha-lyiss politician)

"My people knows well what it means to suffer at the hands of invaders, and we can't let this happen again! we must help them make in years steps other races needed centuries to make, but the actual politics of giving our technologies to them is wrong, they are not culturally ready, just like humans were not ready for wormhole travel."
(Sralh'Hun'Khranth, h'yaech representative)
Technology:
Na’vi are the sentient species with the lowest tech level known in the Known Galaxy, still blocked in Neolithic age. However, there are some exceptions, some clans have mastered metallurgy(Metal Ka'li Clan), navigation(Travelling Shadows Clan) and art of pottery(Master Shapers Clan), and ICA works to have them develop the technology necessary to compete.

"the Hive shares your turmoil, our people has suffered a fate akin to yours, and we will do what is needed to preserve you from further suffering"
(Poleepkwa diplomats speaking to the reunited Na'vi chieftains)

Society and Culture:
Although at first sight they may look like the ‘Noble Savage’ stereotype, na’vi society is not as ideal and perfect as many think. Na’vi are heavily xenophobic and self-righteous, even referring to anyone else’s culture as ‘madness’, and have been at war at least once with all of the races that now are on Pandora, although nowadays they know well how the odds are against them. About how the Sky Peoples ‘killed their own mothers’ argument, many na’vi today(especially those that were raised by humans or others) know that they didn’t since they never had one, other races were not blessed by an almighty planetary hive mind that keeps the balance, what the na’vi get with minimal effort, other races had to work for centuries if not millennia to obtain. At first look the na’vi may look very cold, they rarely mourn the death of a loved one and shrug it off very quickly anyway, but this is because they live a very dangerous lifestyle on a very dangerous planet, they are used to death since many of them die every day because of predators, natural hazards, disease and clan wars, so eventually they are desensitized. Na’vi with non-curable disease or crippling mutilations are either mercy killed or left to die outside of the village, to die with dignity in the embrace of nature. As a funeral ritual, the na’vi either throw the corpses in the wild or eat them(“your spirit has left us, but your body will stay part of the People”). Since a lot of resources cause clans to grow, clan wars have been frequent, sometimes they have run for decades and even after they ended rivalries between clans are very hard to overcome(the Tipani and the Omaticaya clans were at war before the human arrival, for example). Na’vi do not actually ‘live in harmony’ with nature, they simply know to be another part of an ecosystem and accept it, they don’t pretend to ‘control’ it.
The defeat they suffered at the hands of humans in 2162 was a very hard hit for the na’vi, and is referred by them as the ‘Time of Downfall’. forced to step in modernity, stripped of their old lifestyle, beaten and humiliated by humanity, many na’vi clans have been psychologically crushed, thinking “Eywa has forsaken us”. The percentage of suicides in clans is frighteningly high even today, many stranded or orphaned na’vi sank in crime and addictions(“hmph, ‘they don’t need anything we may offer’ my ass, bring in the drugs!”), best-known is the na’vi addiction to energy drinks, akin to the poleepkwa one for cat food. However, there is a bit of hope, ICA is working to help the na’vi, and in the last twenty years many clans have found new hope and stood back up. For the first time in their history, the na’vi now have a centralized government, whose base has been built together with ICA on the ruins of the Omaticaya Hometree, that comprises an alliance of clans that are represented by their chieftains in a democratic council, each chieftain is helped by ICA advisors, and more and more of these advisors today are educated na’vi.
Most na’vi clans are egalitarian hunter-gatherer societies, some stabile and some nomadic, but a few clans had their ‘neolithic revolution’ and evolved into farmers. Depending on the peculiarities of a clan, the masters of a particular skill that is vital part of the Clan’s identity(metalworking for the Metal Lankang Clan, for example) gain great respect and special privileges. Great warriors-hunters are very respected in all clans, especially among hunters-gatherers, and are the most likely to raise to positions of power, especially during conflicts. A clan is typically lead by the Royal Couple, AKA the Chieftain(Oloeiktan) and the Soothsayer(Tsahik) that wield political/military and religious/cultural power, in the most advanced clans the Royal Couple is served by a council of advisors. Although typically hereditary, the position of Chieftain or Soothsayer can be won by particularly respected, competent or sly individuals.

"Pandora is the Cradle of the Na'vi, but a child must leave his cradle...Eywa is our Mother, but a child must find his own way..."
(Leon 'Talion' Van Niekerk, human-raised na'vi and ICA employee, about the changes of Pandora)

Human Arguments:
“the smurfs are Nazis(of course)!”
“the smurfs are stupid!” even if average na’vi IQ is 100, just like humans’s. the main argument is about na’vi’s low tech level.
“the smurfs eat people!” in 40 years it happened twice, the opposite once at month.
“the smurfs are junkies/alcoholists!” guess who sold them…
“the smurfs are mindless drones!” just like poleepkwas, read ‘and so perfectly fine to kill’. even if the hive mind doesn’t control them so much.

Trivia:
-just like all pandoran fauna, na’vi have neuroconnectors, these appendages end into neural antennae which allows them to link with the hive mind and with any other life form of the planet.
-Na’vi never depict Eywa, considering it blasphemous. Guess what happened when humans discovered it…
-their tail ss prehensile, even if not as dexterous as h’yaech’s tentacles or ha-lyiss’s tail. Its main purpose is grabbing branches.
-their tail has a rattle on the tip, it sounds when they are frightnened andor angry.
-neuroconnectors are prehensile too.
-na’vi get addicted to energy drinks, like poleepkwas with cat food. Scientists suppose that energy drinks contain some substance linked to the hive mind.
-na’vi are the only species whom humans used the avatars, they tried with others but the avatars were too easily recognizable.
-alien scientists still find amazing how humans and na'vi look alike.
-humans actually enjoy that na'vi look so 'human', especially human soldiers that take na'vi as prisoners...
-since the gas giant Polyphemus often eclipses the sun on Pandora, na’vi eyes are evolved to see in the dark. However, thanks to pandoran bioluminescence, their low-light vision does not need to be as efficient as, for example, h’yaech's.
-na'vi show bioluminescence, used mainly to express emotion.

great redesign, now it needs better blue colors and their distinct bioluminescent patterns shown in their skin to look even more alien.

Very well done! I'm loving this design!
These Na'vi look a lot more like the lifeforms of Pandora with the extra arms and appendages. I'm guessing in the movie they were going for a more human touch, but I like your style better :3

Despite the fact that District 9 managed to get us to sympathize with cthulhoid bipedal crustaceans without having them look like 'kinda weird humans'.

Thanks for the appreciation.

Interesting redesign. I like how these Na'vi actually look like they're related to other Pandoran lifeforms.

Have four arms, neck air holes, double tendrils, extra eyes, and generally be more alien. My version I was taking more muscular and less... wide fingered/toed. I saw yours has a stronger mental network than I was going for as well.

I was trying to make them look like the actual natives of Pandora.

Well, where can i see your version?

I'm not an artist and the forum I was writing them on has already deleted that part of the archives. I was doing a weird Babylon 5/'more realistic Na'Vi' cross over RP a few years ago.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaptain-Kefiah In reply to MistaSilentKiller [2013-07-03 05:50:38 +0000 UTC]

he ruled the Omaticaya clan for a while, after the humans came back he led the resistance but was defeated, nowadays he leads the na'vi resistance groups and human secret services want him deader than dead(5 billion dollars to the one that will bring them his head), in media he is painted as the new osama bin laden.

not only is it more fitting that they have more limbs . . . it is also more relevent to the name "avatar" as the term is from Hindu mythology . . . which features blue many-armed dieties and spiritual beings . . .

Kaptain-Kefiah In reply to Motion-Music [2013-03-16 06:49:52 +0000 UTC]

actually, Cameron mentioned he wanted to make them multi-armed, but it would have been too difficult for the actors.
