Description I did more layering of coloured pencil, especially the background, trying to get more depth and smooth out some of the uneven texture....I lost some of the white...have gone too far. What else could I do. I may as well go even further.
I decided to add some crosshatching with my fineliner pen. This fish has evolved...wish I could go back.
A bit of photoshop tweaking always helps.

********************************
Here's my poem that goes with the fish!
********************************

I’ve invented a fish
He’s a colourful fellow
With pretty bright colours
Red, blue, green and yellow…

He began as a doodle
Inside my sketch book
But the longer I drew
The better he looked

I used all my blues
And most of my reds
Three or four different yellows
I have no regrets.

My watercolour pencils
are fun to explore.
I blended and shaded
with colours galore.

I shaded and mixed
My blues with my greens
Then added some water,
to make aquamarine.

Blues and reds gave me purple
Not just one kind, but six
Reds and pinks over yellow
make an interesting mix.

Then I painted a rainbow
So outrageous and bold
The more colour, the better;
I’ll even add gold

My fish has spiked fins
He has gills, but no scales
He has razor sharp teeth
and a fanciful tail.

He swims through the water
always searching for prey.
He eats smaller fish;
ten dozen per day.

He has to be watchful
To avoid the big fishes
Because he’s so fancy
He looks quite delicious.

So here is my fish tale
I hope you’ll agree
My fish is a beauty!
It’s plain to see!

Perhaps for my next
Invention I’ll make,
A colourful bird,
or a bug, or a snake.

Why don’t you invent
A fish just like me
You could do more than one,
maybe one hundred and three.

It took me a week
To finish my creature
Now to upload to DA,
for my next weekly feature.

It is a marvelous fish, and fun to see how it evolved I like this one better than the photoshopped one; it's great to have choices

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you like this one, because I can take the credit for this...with some of the other ones I have to give some credit to photoshop. I hate sharing the limelight with a computer....

He really stands out from the background, even in small view. I think you did a great job on finishing this one. The colors are awesome.
The background indicates a wild and dangerous sea to me that is. Looking at the fishes teeth I think he can handle the danger that could come towards him.
Lovely piece of work

yes very much lol, your should right more poems that are silly and fun, maybe try to write a poem about each of your art pieces then you will get better at poetry therefore furthering your art skills to become even more talented in writing about your drawings.

I have a friend who is also an artist, and she is also good at writing poetry. Maybe she can give me some pointers too of how to become better at writing poetry. I imagine it's like art. It's a skill that can be learned and improved. I think like with anything, if you do learn technique ( the how to), then practice it every day, you should see an improvement.
Mind you, my passion is drawing and painting, but I do love to write as well.
Thanks for your interest and encouragement.

no problem, also vocabulary is a good enhancement in poetry,if you use vivid language and good metaphors in describing out things.

Hi Karin, I like the darker background, it makes the fish stand out more. The cross hatching is a great idea.
He looks more like a predator now. Deceptively pretty to lure in his prey.
I think he's a buddy of my fish prowling the depths for a feast!

KarinZeller In reply to suedollin [2007-07-06 00:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your great comment, Sue! Yes he does look more fierce than I'd like. I guess it's my subconscous dark side coming to the surface... I don't mind that he's no longer as friendly, except for my poem, which is about a friendly fish.

Well, there is only one thing to do and thats write another poem. What lurks in the dark murky depths of the ocean? Maybe when you see my fish it will inspire a darker poem. or a big belly laugh!

KarinZeller In reply to suedollin [2007-07-07 00:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Writing poems doesn't come naturally to me... It's kind of a one off thing that I would feel inspired to write a poem. Perhaps I will try to learn more about how to write poetry, or rhymes. I would love to be able to write funny rhymes along the lines of Dr Szeuss or Roald Dahl. I do love to write as well, and would like to combine my love for writing with my love for art.
Can't wait to see your fish...hope you manage to fix it....I'm bursting with anticiapation...

Hi Karin, again its taken me too long to reply to your message. It got stuck on the bottom of the list and haven't been able to get there quickly enough. So today I am working from the bottom up!
I think you are a perfect candidate to write a children's book. Your playful pictures tell a story in themselves but to have a written narrative would be a wonderful thing. I loved your fishy poem and you have the talent to do a book. Art and poetry are perfect partners. As I believe music and art are as well. I would love to have my sons music posted with my textile pieces just to enhance the experience.
Oh hell its cold here. We had a big hail storm yesterday afternoon and it dropped about 10 degrees in 10 minutes. Now its raining and just a yucky day. Didn't even go for my swim this morning.
Now I'll attack the other comments. Talk to you soon.

Well, here I was waiting and wondering what took you so long...
Just kidding, of course...Don't worry! Be happy!
Last thing I want to do is be a burden...so if you are too busy to answer...I promise I will not hold it against you. I'm so behind on my messages. I think I have over 200, many are faves, 45 are personal messages...yeah, I always start at the top too...I really should start at the bottom.
Thanks for the kind words. I've always wanted to do a children's book. I have a friend who is good at writing verses and poems. Maybe I will collaborate with her. Still, I would be so pleased to write and illustrate or just illustrate. Either would be cool. I plan to make a book even if it doesn't get published. I'll do it just for myself.
So your sons are musicians or do music as a hobby. Yes, music and quilts might be an interesting collaboration. Thank again for all your lovely messages...now go and have some fun today! Have agreat day!
