you're doing very well, believe me!
just a couple things i noticed:
to make his lovely coat look nicer, you could try simply not smudging. or (if you really want to smudge) duplicate the horse layer, smudge the top layer and then lower the opacity of the top layer. That way, you'll have a slightly smudged look, but the horse still retains his realness. also, if you do smudge, try to go with the flow of the hair.
your mane and tail look super nice, after a little more practice they'll be unbelievable! i suggest not using true black or true white though, as they just contrast a little too much. try picking a dark color from the horses coat, and use that as a base. also, maybe try using a smaller pixel brush for adding detail to the mane and tail, i usually use size 2px-4px, depending on the size of the image for my finishing touches

Brilliant! I LOVE it - you could try using the opacity level adjustment when you paint in the mane and tail - the higher you go with the opacity then it's easier to blend it in x

Brilliant - that's how I got into digital painting too - I started with manip and then found I was painting as much as manipulation and so made the transission - I only found layers about 4 months ago and they are fab arent they xx
