Description
Your head feels so heavy and brittle,
You squeeze your eyes open and gasp.
What's before you makes you feel so little,
So hopelessly, helplessly, sadly you rasp:
"Where am I? Where could I be?"
Then you give a scream, for out of the steam, steps a beauty, a vision, a dream.
Clothes like quick-silver, eyes like coals.
Skin bright like ivory, and soft like a foal's.
Hair that curls 'round and looks like mahogany,
And a voice as gentle as a mid-summer sea.
Your love-sick stomach feels utterly tossed,
He pulls you in close and whispers, "You lost?"
You flutter and stutter and think of a lie,
"No. No, I'm not. I'm fine."
But the glory, the richness, like finely aged wine,
It draws you in closer, to your demise.
"My name is Hades, but what is yours?
No, wait. Don't tell me…let me guess…"
He stands there and ponders, luminescent eyes swimming with promise.
You try to edge away, (Where have you heard that name?) but he sweeps you back up, just the same.
You blush and feel troubled, both at the same time.
In the presence of beauty so strong it's a crime.
And then you realize it's the devil and let out a scream from this stranger of steam.
Sensing this, he draws you even closer, and the lure is now cast.
"Would you care to come with me?" he asks demurely.
By now it's too late,
I've taken the bait.
With a flash and a kiss
I sink deep into bliss.
And float on a cloud of sheer joy.
Now a toy.
When I wake I am startled and let out a cry.
For around me are skulls and stones, mortar, blood, moss and bones.
And I realize where I am.
Hades.
Also know as Hell,
Does that name ring a bell?
'Cause it sure does to me
For I am, you see,
The Mistress of Hades,
Both the demon and realm.
Instead of pencil I clutch a sword at its helm.
As his lady I wonder the dark halls of death,
And as I'm not dead I don't die yet again,
As I throw bones of the unfortunate to Cerberus the hell-hound.
The bones of those who were misery bound.
My only companion inside of my crypt is a stone bat with a chipped ear.
He's the only thing I don't fear.
Archimedes was granted life to keep me amused,
While I wait to be summoned so I can be misused.
And I often think back to that night and wish for a redo.
I'd come back and be new.
If only I hadn't been tricked by his scheme,
If I only hadn't followed the stranger in the steam.
