I was not born a lion,

For even those in Oz

Have potential for courage.

No, I am a horse.

And like my hooved friend

I go through life with blinders on

Running away when things go

In ways I think they shouldn't.

You pushed me away.

I hated that.

You pushed me away to save me.

I hated that more.

I wanted to be used and broken,

I wanted to be that abused puppy

Recoiling at signs of love,

But you wouldn't have that.

I saw my downfall reflected in you

And told you were falling apart,

When it was my seams that were unraveling.

And in a sudden vision of truth and clarity

I saw all this unfold before my eyes.

But years have passed since then

So I hide behind the miles

That now stand between us

And cry "I'm sorry!"
