Self Critique:
I personally am quite happy with certain parts of this piece. I wanted to do an ocean based picture simply for the sake of experimenting with stylized waves and I feel that endeavor was successful.
I am pleased with most of the coloring, except the shading is incorrect on the mermaid who, as you can no doubt see, should have been backlit.
I also am disappointed with the poor blend of the sunset behind her. there's a harsh line where green and greenish blue meet and it heavily distracts me.
In my rush to try the stylizing, I overlooked the steps I usually take to ensure proper body proportions on the Mermaid. This caused an out of line face (if you look, you'll see the nose and mouth are angled away from where the center line should be and her right eye is higher than the left).
The arms don't quite fit her body and this has been a trouble area for me all along. I intend to focus on practicing the arms and hands from now until I am satisfied with the way they fit the characters I illustrate.
I wish I had put more thought in to the tail- it looks like an afterthought because, well, frankly it WAS an afterthought. I intended to illustrate a human girl at first and then felt I would like to draw a mermaid.
The results of this lack of planning result in a physically awkward pose. If mermaids were real the tail wouldn't be able to curve that way from her body- assuming her tail was of the same proportions as a human's legs.
I am extremely happy with her hair. its glossy and clings to her skin the way wet hair should. I wanted to tribute Kerrie Jenkins, one of my favorite artists, with the detail in the hair, so I went all out on it.
This is a touchy subject, but I feel like her breast area turned out nicely. They are smooshed up against the rock and I tried to illustrate their being pushed up. I think it adds a realistic touch without being too skanky.
I know I already mentioned this but I'm most happy with the waves crashing on the rocks. The slight curls on the end look great in my opinion and I feel I managed to get a transparent feel while keeping true to the stylizing I wanted to incorporate.

If you see anything else I should take note of please feel free to state your opinion. If you're purposefully inflammatory I will simply ignore you. Poor attitudes harbor poor judgement.

I really like this piece. I read through the first criticism and agree with some things but not many. I really like her face. It's actually quite a bit less long than it usually is and I really like her expression, it's almost seductive- which is something I definitely tie in with most mermaids.
Her left arm seems a little bit short and her hand a LITTLE stiff (not much though) but I still really like the way you shaded it and the pose is a great idea. Her right arm looks amazing though and I disagree with the comment earlier about how her face should be smooshed. Her hand is on her jaw which wouldn't really make an impression on her face (even my pudgy face doesn't squish when I put my hand there) so I think that it's perfect, especially since you DID do some shading for it.
There does seem to be a small lack of darker shading on her face which I only notice because of the GORGEOUS lighting in the background. I also think that increased darker shading would make her even more beautiful - if that's even possible!
I REALLY like this piece though. I think she's beautiful and I adore her jewelry and hair. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was Adendi. XD
(She would be gorgeous as a mermaid I think)
Regardless of how big you think her head is, it really doesn't look too large. I think that the only thing that makes it seem a bit too big is that her left arm isn't drawn quite big enough.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BEST PIECES! HER FACE IS THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD!!!!

I actually intended this to be Akila swimming in the sea at first, and then I decided I'd like to draw a mermaid. Once I finished detailing the sketch, however, I also thought she resembled Adendi! I doodled the facial marks Adendi has on her and everything. I wanted to sell prints of this though, so I took 'em off. How funny. I kept her hair color as a sort of subtle tribute and I'm glad you picked up on it. With her skin color it's now like a cross between a mermaid, Ackalaka and Adendi-
OH noes Ackalaka and Adendi made a mer-baby?! IDFK why I just thought of that D:

You know, you're right about her arm being too small. That seems to be my worst weak point- proportioning hands and arms to proper head size. Also, her ears are a little on the teeny-tiny side. I hope to remedy these issues soon. I seem to have lost some of my spark with drawing people after doing so many pokemon drawings. The moral of this story must be to keep the variety going for the sake of consistency XDDD

The first comment has helped me- you'll see my new drawing on Saturday; it's the next theme piece and it has Audrey and some horses. There's a big improvement in anatomy over this. I feel like I went a little backwards with this piece because I rushed it, so it's no surprise to me that it has a lot of mistakes to point out. haha... That's what we get for rushing, huh. So I worked on the things Shocka pointed out and there's a noticeable difference. HURP~ You'll like it I'm sure.

Can I just say I LOVE LOVE LOVE how you use colors? I've always found your copic works breathtaking. Your ability to take in consideration light and color just astound me. Pretty much the reason why I love watching your Youtube channel and seeing how you color with them!
The only thing I can say is there are a few anatomy mistakes.

Yeah I see those mistakes. I'm not totally pleased with the mermaid's proportions but I think the coloring sort of makes up for it in a way.

Your humans suffers from "horse face syndrome". Eyes and nose are placed too far a part which kind of gives the look of a horse. The right (I can't tell. I have a horrible case of spacial retardation) hand looks really odd, and if the lighting is gonna be at the back, I would light the back more and the face should be a lot darker. Oh and if she is gonna rest her hand on her cheek, her eye should be a little it smooshed.

I will keep that in mind, thank you for the crit. I definitely know what you mean by the hands- they are derpy.
I was using a mirror as a reference and the pressure of my hand didn't squish my eye, so I guess I didn't even register... but now that you mention it she would look a lot better if I'd added that in.
I reffed my facial proportions for eye- nose placement. My nose is set low on my face so in a way you called me a horse face XDDDD!!! HAHA~
(as a result your comment made me belly laugh, and yet my heart stings a little).
I personally like her facial features the way they are and don't see much I'd change there. Matter of opinion I guess.
OH YEAH~ The lighting is wrong. OOPSIE D: I should tweak that.
You forgot to mention that her head is twice the size it should be, which I noticed after I inked it. I wanted to color something anyways, so oh well.
Again, thank you for the honest opinion. It may hurt a little but I DID ask for it and I see the truths you have pointed out.
