Description I wore my Once-ler cosplay for the first time Sunday at Tekkoshocon. With the movie being fairly new and not anime related, only a few people recognized me but it was still a fun and very comfortable cosplay.

Thanks to Emily for taking so many photos! I may post a few more later.

To those wondering how I made the pants:
I already had the light grey pants. I measured out the stripes and masked off the lighter ones with tape. The dark stripes were painted with Simply Spray soft fabric paint. This stuff is amazing! It's a mess to work with, but it drys really nicely without making the fabric stiff and scratchy.

Thank you! This was actually a really cheap and easy costume to make. I would love to do Greed-ler as well, but that would take a lot more time and money.

I'm planning on being The Once-Ler for Halloween. SO You said the spray is from Hobby Lobby? Well I'm on a very low buget, so can you tell me more about the spray? The cost, what kind (the specific color), and the fabric you painted it onto? I am planning on using it for jeans sooo... please help! I only have a few days let for this and I would really like your help.

I used Simply Spray fabric paint. You can probably get it at places other then Hobby Lobby too. I think it was about $10 per can and I used three (so the paint cost me more than the pants!) They didn't have dark gray so I used black and just did thiner coats. I think it would work fine on jeans but they may soak up more paint.

Good luck on finding paint (you may be able to find it cheaper online) and getting you costume done before Halloween!

I want to cosplay as the Once-ler so bad!!! His "innocent" version and his green suit c: Sadly I'm way too short and facially, I wouldn't be able to pull it off; I look really girly =3= (which is funny because I'm a tomboy)
It's a dream for me to cosplay as the Once-ler! Also, your cosplay is fantastic!!! (Jealous) Thank you for adding the information on the pants!

I'm actually very short and quite girly and I cosplayed him anyway! So, go ahead and cosplay him if you want. Glad you like my costume. I would like to make the green suit as well!

I'm planning on it, the hardest things for me to find are the wig and the pants. (I don't have any black or grey pants! Just blue jeans! XD) And of course! c: It's awesome, and good luck! <3 I hope to get the green suit myself

Will the paint on the pants still be in good condition if you get it wet? Or does the paint come off then? I really have no idea xD and I'm planning on making it, and wearing it to a convention. But if it rains.. I'm dead xD I think it stays since it's fabric paint.. but still. I've got to ask. :3

Very nice cosplay by the way ^^ <3

I was worried the first time I wore the pants in the rain too! That amount of water didn't affect the paint at all but they did fade a bit when I put them through the washer. I would just suggest giving the paint plenty of time to dry before geting them wet.

That's awesome! I'm trying to cosplay him right now... Did you get the spray at a store, or did you have to order it from somewhere? Also, any advice on finding the fedora and vest? I'd appreciate any help... XD Yours looks awesome.

Kasandra-Callalily In reply to KanoUshiri [2012-07-31 13:24:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I got the spray at Hobby Lobby. If you don't have that chain near you, you could always check other craft and sewing stores. I already had the fedora and vest in my closet (I kinda dress like this all the time ^_^ I'd suggest looking at thrift stores. That's where I got the shirt and pants.

Awesome, thanks. I found a small thing of spray in a 3-pack at Walmart, but I'll check Hobby Lobby. (We have one here.) I'll keep an eye on thrift stores for the vest.

Okay so I have been thinking about cosplaying as the once-ler but because I am short on cash, do you think it would work if I used duct tape for the pants?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasandra-Callalily In reply to kitaitheawesome [2012-06-02 23:37:23 +0000 UTC]

I think it would be pretty uncomfortable to wear duct taped pants- especially that tight! Fabric paint isn't that expensive actually, but try whatever you like.

and um question
there isnt any simply spray soft fabric paint near me so i have to order it < A >
do you know how much you needed to make the pants?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasandra-Callalily In reply to duckychan97 [2012-05-13 13:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I bought four cans and didn't use all of the last one. It's always nice to have some extra for touchups though! Also, I used black paint because the only grey they had was really light. Once it soaked into the fabric it turned out light enough.

Thank you and I'm glad to be of help! I have heard of people sewing together striped pants before but that doesn't seem like it would work too well... At any rate, it would be a lot more work!

Hi, I just finally finished a pair of jeans with the Simply Spray and it turned out really well (aside from the fact that 5 out of the 6 I ended up buying stopped spraying halfway [or less] through the can)!
My question is though, how well does it wash? should I be worried about a lot of fade?
Thanks again!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kasandra-Callalily In reply to allsystemsactivated [2012-05-13 13:32:26 +0000 UTC]

I had the same problem. One of my cans wouldn't spray at all so I broke it open and used that paint for touchups with a brush. I actually have been afraid to wash mine, though I probably should before I wear them again. The can says the paint can be washed one it's set but I'm still worried about the paint fading or running.

allsystemsactivated In reply to Kasandra-Callalily [2012-05-13 19:44:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I ended up washing mine. It faded out quite a bit but I think it's perfect shade now because it looked fully black when I did it at first. I'm going to look up how to make it stay better just in case it'll come out more. It didn't run or dye other clothing though, so that's a plus.

It's good to hear it didn't run. Mine could stand to fade a bit too.
