Description AHHHHHH this felt so good to draw, I had fun. xD I'm trying to beat the crap out of my art block by drawing something kinda loose and colorful without dwelling on details so much, though this still does have some details of course, especially in the foreground, because it just doesn't feel right if I don't put detail in. My main focus on this was [extreme?] lighting and color balance however. There are still plenty of things in this that I could probably touch up on, but this was mainly done for fun and to try to break out of an art block, so after working on it all day off and on, I'm at the point where I can call it done, or just about done in case I decide to go back and refine anything. It's way past bedtime anyways, and we have to get up early tomorrow for easter, so I probably just screwed myself over by staying up so late, buuuut. I like how this came out so it's not all bad. xD

For those of you that don't know, these are my characters, Rook (foreground) and Flasiere (background). I wouldn't be surprised if most of you didn't know them since I haven't drawn Rook in forever, and this is the first picture of Flasiere I've submitted other than her ref and a character compilation... which was a long time ago.
So yeah, Rook caught a fish, and as he looks up he sees Flasiere approaching the lake he's in. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. P: (But no, they're not going to fight or anything, neither one of these characters are very aggressive, if anything it'd be more caution from meeting for the first time or something c: )

I was kinda inspired by *griffsnuff and the way she uses color in her pics when I made this, though I didn't refer to her pics while drawing this, it was more in the back of my head if anything xD
I didn't use any refs for this picture actually o-o Sometimes I like just working from my head to see what I know.

This was my first time trying a serious pic with corel painter too, I didn't have it on this computer for the longest time and not long ago I finally found the CD to install it. I like it. ouo I find the brushes more... balanced than SAI, though for the majority of this picture I had to have the opacity way down low to about 1 or 2, and then keep building from there. I think I may do more pictures like this. :3

...Dangit I'm so tired that I'm rambling :I I'd better wrap this up before this ends up too long... or am I too late? Dx

Lovely lighting technique. This looks like it could belong in a storyboard. It draws your eye around very nicely.

This is very nice! The detail is great, especially in the fur and it's wavy texture.

I will say one thing though. Flasiere's front legs and shoulders are positioned in a very awkward pose. I do remember you saying that your species was flexible, but in real life that stance would off-set his (?) balance. The front leg to the right of the picture is bowed out. Where as a cat or dog who would be in a similar position, their elbows would be right against their ribs and they'd be a bit tense. Just something to think about.

I understand how hard it is to set up sketches and what not. I can picture an image in my head but I can't put it to paper or photoshop. Not that I've given up, but my interest in drawing has fallen quite a bit. The more you work on it, the better it gets! Here's to hoping I maybe can get my drawing interest back up. There really isn't much for digital in my gallery (there is a little bit!) but there is far more on my old account at ~wolfprincess728 . You should go take a look.

Thank you so much

Yeah, I thought it looked off too, but I did kinda want her in an awkward, cautious looking pose, and couldn't picture how else to draw her legs in that pose. I wasn't trying for perfect anatomy here however, I was mostly working with color and lighting. But if I ever try another pose similar to that, I'll try to take that into consideration. For this I wasn't too worried about anatomy since I just wanted to let loose and have fun. xD

I'm the same in some instances, one of the hardest things for me to start is a digital sketch, and all of this picture was on one layer, I sketched it on another layer for guidelines, then put in some color until it was strong enough to go on it's own, then I deleted the sketch. I usually work with more layers when I do digital.
Well I hope you can get back into drawing, and you're right, the more you work on art, the better it gets, it's just a never ending learning process. Practice and experimentation are by far the quickest ways to improve I think, along with using references and the occasional good tutorial.

You're welcome.

I understand. You try something different and will you likely do it again? probably not, but it's always good to know how to improve. And even if you try a different pose, the input I have given you can help with that. You never know!

ONE layer?! Dear god... I always (when I actually do do work, I usually color stuff, instead of draw) have multiple layers for each separate thing. Nose, inside of ears, eyes are on one (any teeth nails so on on that same layer), usually right below the lineart, then shadows - any markings - main color - and stuff for the background. sometimes I name them what they are, really only if I have a lot going on and can't figure it out without clicking them all!

I learned photoshop with time, experiements and tutorials.

Kasaurus In reply to WillowMoonWolf [2011-04-27 04:23:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm running out of poses to use, so I never know when I may do a similar pose, even subconsciously.

Mmhmm x.x That's one reason it was so hard to change certain things in the picture after I have already laid down the color. xD
I normally don't use that many layers, but I'll normally have at least 3 or 4 and then add more as needed. I try to keep the number down as much as possible though by collapsing them once I'm finished with that layer so I don't get confused with so many. I don't really do linearts anymore except for lineart commissions or collabs, so that eliminates one layer from the question. cx

I usually use Paint Tool SAI, and now Corel Painter Essentials 4(which I found I liked after actually trying it out, it has a lot of good traditional mediums to work with digitally), though I do have PS Elements that I use sometimes to enhance or add text or something. I remember when I first started digital, I didn't get the whole opacity thing and always worked with 100% opacity, using the airbrush as my only means for density.... big mistake, no wonder I couldn't get the effects I wanted. xD But it helped me learn and find out about opacity and now I find it hard to work digital at all with %100 opacity. So blinding!

Outstanding work!
I really love the fur textures that you've used here and how the body bends so naturally!!
I also love the reflective colours and 'texture' of teh water here too, but I would saw that the ripples could use a little work ;]
But other than that, woow Amazing!! 8D

By the way, would you still like me to draw Huskywolf, or is it ok if I do another OC of yours, like maybe one of the cheetahs? c: I don't think I've ever submitted a cheetah drawing here before. o:

Absolutely stunning work - Rook has always been one of my favourites out of your characters, and although I hadn't seen Flasiere before, I think I love him!
Great colouring work, I love the lighting and the detail of the bg <3

Hehe Rook used to be my favorite until I made Volknyr. cx But I still won't abandon him as a character or anything, so I want to draw him and my other OC's more c:
(Flasiere is a girl :3 She has an odd name I just thought up one day in school, the last e actually has an apostrophe over it, but idk the code to type it like that >.>; )

I love those purples and blues and greens on Rook too, and the lighting on Flasiere is OSSUM. <3

/shot2

Thank you so much ;o; I never used to be able to either, I think this is one of the first pics I've submitted where I actually tried to make it look more wet. O: I basically just darkened the color underneath, then used rounded 'v' shapes to look like clumped up fur, made them go in different directions, even over the water, and then used white highlights. Surprisingly it worked o-o

Hee those colors were fun, as well as the lighting, extreme contrast ftw

xDD
Wild FLASIERE appeared! What will Rook do?

I haven't tried it with pencils, but it seems like it should be the same basic thing, except for the white, you'd probably have to use acrylic for that P:
But I'm sure you'd be able to if you practice it a lot, you learn quickly and have lots of talent, so, just try it when you get the chance c:

Kasaurus In reply to LokiTheSaint [2011-04-24 13:55:45 +0000 UTC]

Flasieres? Because I know her snout is too long, but it would be hard to fix because all the color is on one layer and I was so tired by the time I decided it was done that I couldn't have worked much more on it if I tried. And as I said before, my main focus was color balance and lighting, not so much anatomy and perfection for this, I just wanted to have fun with something for once, I've been finding art less fun and more stressful lately. x.x If I have time sometime I may go back and try to refine some things on this, but at the moment I'll leave it as is.
