Description ...That is the question!

Ok so this isn't really a tutorial, per-se, more a step-by-step of my latest doodle;

By request from ~qwertypictures , who asked to see the process of a splodge pic being made... this is a weird thing for me, because it's such a spontaneous/personal/ instant art-form (the whole POINT for me is that you don't plan before hand, you just DO, and each one is different) but I figured taking a couple of shots throughout the process wouldn't ruin the spontaneity too much, and if they inspire someone else to give it a go then great. :]
I've also had a few other questions regarding my marker work and inking too, so I'm hoping that this might clear that up a little.

So *stressedjenny introduced me to this way of doodling a while ago, and since then it's become one of my favourite pass-times! lol When you draw every day for a living it can be really hard to think up ideas and find inspiration for draw for fun in your down-time, however these pics are spawned out of pure creative-energy ... you literally make a slodge on the page with no preconceived ideas about what you'll end up drawing, and then just see what you can turn it in to.

The first picture shows my splodge, green marker pen... doesn't really look like much but after some prodding and poking I decide it was something with horns

The second shot shows my rough line-art laid out, I first started drawing a snail but somewhere along this stage he became some weird hairy dragon..

The third shot shows most of the colour marker and the tip-ex laid are down.. all that remains here is to use the white marker pen to colour his wings and add the patches on his skin.

The final shot is more or less the finished article... once I got all the colours in place I go back over all the lines and tidy/strengthen them up/make sure they're all good.. also adding some shading too.

Please bare in mind though that's not how every I do is made, I change the technique to suit my mood, and really so long as you have fun there's no rules as to how you should do it... - Just go crazy and doodle something you never would have thought of before!

Thanks for reading.

here's a thought, it could be cool to get a collection together, just take the "before" shot of the splodge, and then post it up along side the scanned in finished picture... that'd be a cool comparison, - to see the evolution, wouldn't it? :]

I was going to do that with my little spodge book, but I was far too impatient and started doodling straight away LOL! It certainlt would be grat. I'd love to get a bunch of people to work on one slode and see all the different results!

boo. you grumpy old stick in the mud, you! lol
ah well.. I guess I'll sit on that one for a while then.. i don't really have too much time for setting up something like that anyway I guess.
Glad you think DtWT isn't a waste of time! - I like to think that we don't SPAM people quite so much as other groups either

StressedJenny In reply to KatCardy [2010-09-16 22:32:30 +0000 UTC]

Same here, clubs mean maintenance, and I hardly have time for da anyway (Sssh I should be drawing comics now!) OMG! DTWT's behaviour is saintlike compared to the stuff from other clubs I'm bombarded with XD

KatCardy In reply to StressedJenny [2010-09-16 22:36:10 +0000 UTC]

lol! tbh I "unwatch" deviations from most clubs I join/watch (not that I follow that many) .. just too much dross. -_-
Yay Comics! :]
We had to pull out of the 10thology btw deadline was clashing with MSND too much... - hopefully we'll be first in line for Volume 2 if there is one though!

Oh noes!! That sucks, I hope there is a second volume too. It is hard, especially when you have to make a story form scratch and do other work. OMG So excited about MSND though!! There's a bookshop in Stratford upon Avon that is certainly going to sell it and I can't wait to see it in there.
