Well, at least Reaper was willing to add more red to her outfit. But in all seriousness, this artwork is beautifully unreal. What stood out first the most is, of course, said redness. It's confinement in her outfit from waist to chest (not counting the red "hairband"), could symbolize her past human emotions, now surrounded/consumed by the "emotional blackness" of her role in the game as an assassin. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but for a drawing like this it's hard not to try seeing the bigger picture. And I'm just getting started...
The other example of red (that background!) is just as intriguing. The "dripping lines" above Widowmaker's upturned right hand are likely supposed to be drops of blood, while some of the other red splotches and blots almost seem like rose petals flying through the air; again, perhaps this is a contrast between the concepts of feeling emotions (such as love) and living to kill. The way in which the surrounding redness breaks into cracks furthers this effect as being ever more surreal, as if her world has been "breaking apart" for some time. But not too long: said cracks are pretty much surface deep (maybe she prefers they stay that way). Have I lost anybody yet?
The shading, well, that's just yet another impressive part of this artwork. It makes Widowmaker look like a mix of Gothic-era countess and cyberpunk catburglar (i.e. the "tubes" above her head and those to the sides of and surrounding her body). Out of curiosity, are the tubes above her head meant to be her hair, or do I have that wrong? All the detail in that shading is just gorgeous too, it's clear you put a lot of work into that alone (as well as everything else).
Also just noticed the two red vials near/next to her left hip; not sure if this is supposed to be hers or that of her fallen foes. Since at least one of them seems to be attached to one of the many tubs, perhaps the latter? The tubing itself could be the "arms" of the spider she takes her codename from (and a black widow has a the red mark in one spot with the rest of its body in black, well shucks NOW I get it!), or the tubes could a web she's now trapped in as a conditioned assassin.
I get the feeling I'm not the only one who thought this, but Widowmaker also seems somewhat...vampiric in this drawing. Along with the black-and-red aesthetic, there's the fact of her skin tone seeming almost undead, a white tinged with a very light blue. This is also the case with her right arm which, because it's uncovered, could be meant to suggest that despite her conditioing she can still feel; seeing as this arm is attached to the hand reaching for the abovementioned "blood drops", it would make sense. Then again, the red lines that crisscross over her arm kind of look like circuitry, possibly suggesting that said conditioing goes so far as to code how blood pumps through her veins.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea (also this post is already pushing tl;dr status). Hopefully I haven't gone overboard in terms of focusing on too many details in one comment, but I didn't want to just say "Ooohh, sexy drawing, please make more" and leave it that. Yes, Widowmaker is certainly beautiful, but her character also goes through a truly screwed up event that you hint at with this picture; it ain't all about the looks, and sometimes there's danger lurking beneath the surface.
Congratulations on a real thought-provoking piece. I can't help but wonder if you plan on bringing this "cyberpunk Gothic" look to any other drawings you make of Overwatch characters (that is, if you haven't already).
