Rushed does NOT necessarily mean "sloppy"!
This IS WONDERFUL! The flames looks like flames, have wonderful lighting effects, flow nicely in a plasma like way that actual flames do. Though the same colors are used for the butterfly wing's glow (and flight path) there is a clear distinction that makes it look like stardust instead.Β
The background sponge with little speckles makes a nice backdrop. I like to imagine a cold-winters night (perhaps a new moon, perhaps not) with sparkling stars and the soft glow from the blue-fired flame of this magic wielder (guild member?).
His pure admiration (yearning?) of this precious innocent being, who is free to fly where-ever it wants to roam and for reasons unknown to him, chooses to stay by his side even-so.
The bright, calming glow of the mark on his fore-head like a soft lunar-glow nightlight (not the harsh yellow or white night-lights but the soft greens or pale opaque (if light can even be called that...)).Β
The way the head is angled, and the eyes. Wonderful. The shadow is not over-demanding, but defined enough to see. The inner glow of his eyes, still warm. (I interpret it as a sign he allowed his inner-heat to cool some to better welcome [and not harm] his butterfly-friend.)
The way an observer can *tell* where exactly he is looking without any indication from the pupils or eye-whites. The shine within his eyes to say he is still alive.
The sparkle of the gem reflecting off the night-sky/butterfly and complimenting the flame. The overall motion of this piece. The wonderful stillness that brings a restful calm.Β
Just the plain: "I know life is rough, yet there are always little things that can make it just a bit brighter" message (at least I feel, and I'm certain others do too) is only a few things as to why this drawing, even though you say it is rushed, has so many favorites, and became "top 24 popular".Β
The artist is always the harshest critic. You see "flaws" when others do not because no one can ever emulate the exact image that is created within one's head--simply because of limitations that apply to the physical realm that do not necessarily apply to the thoughts/images/stories our minds create. (It does NOT have to be exact.)Β
Smile.
Find your happy place. Breathe in the sweet air that place creates within your mind, and continue on. You got this.
