Description I like rocs…or at least the concept of a roc I once saw a drawing of one a very long time ago. It had these enormous feet and claws, and I really really liked it. Its head was more pointy than mine, but I wasn’t going for copying it, though it would be fun to do a more generally pointy version/breed thing. So yah, the size of the legs/feet is deliberate. Besides, I’ve never seen rocs with any other distinguishing features that sent them apart from being simply bloody big birds/eagles, so nah. Actually, these feet are a lot smaller than the design I was remembering; it was hard enough to force myself to make them this big.
Ahh, my trusty biro. Wonderful for sketching with, but scans like a bastard; it reflects orangey light where I’ve pressed hard and dented the paper, and where it’s wrinkled. I’ve tried to correct it, but it’s not perfect.

I like it. It really has a feel of being massive, instead of being simply a very large bird of prey. And the folds/ruffles in the neck look sweet too.

would you mind if i used this in a school project on fantasy creatures? the final result might end up on DA as well, and i would of course give you full credit for your work. if you don't want it on DA, i will simply take it out.

First, thank you for asking me. It's very honest of you. Second, what exactly would you be doing with it? I'm mostly just curious, as if you won't be doing anything with profit involved, it should be fine. And I will probably be fine about you posting it up on dA, as long as you credit me, and it would be great if you could link to this original. Once again thanks for asking - and faving! x)

I'm part of a writer's craft class at high school. i wrote a short story/reference book on African mythological creatures. I need to present it in some way, and i wanted to illustrate it and make a slide show/movie of it to show the class so i don't have to make 25 copies (lol. that would be a lot of ink). I'm not being marked on the artwork, so you will be getting all the credit, under whatever name you want (your real name, a pen name, etc) in the back of the book (When I post on DA, I'll be using your account name instead). I've been getting a much better response than I expected, so your picture may not end up being used as I now have more than enough pictures, but I'm not sure which ones I'm using yet, it'll all depend on how they fit around the writing.

Oh wow, I don't know if I've ever seen an actual drawing of a Roc before
Great pic!
The anatomy looks somehow draconic to me, and I like the head/face, it has a sort of old feeling to it, I like that.
And Homigosh, detail *dies* I wish I had your patience.
I find the sketchiness of the horse doesn't quite fit with the rest of the pic, but it doesn't really spoil it.

Nice!

Never seen a roc drawing before? You're missing out. Mind you, once I think about it, I haven't seen many, either. That's one of the reasons I drew it.
Your right about the draconic/old-ness, though I hadn't seen it before. I knew I was going for a slight feeling to it, but I wasn't sure what it was. I think you just hit on it.
The detail isn't anything special, I'm afraid; just lots of little loops. I could never draw the feathers in properly...eek!
Again, you're right about the horse; the reason it's like that is because the whole thing was sketchy originally - like the roc's feet. Then I got carried away and did a bold outline and a bunch of detailing, which kinda covered up the messiness on the roc. I didn't want to make a big focus of the horse as it was just there for size comparison, so I left it. Perhaps I should have smartened it up a bit.
I'm glad you like it - I never draw birds, and I didn't use a ref for this (explains a few things ), so I'm happy it turned out okay I love rocs; they should get drawn more.

Who needs cars when you have a roc?! Wow. WOW. And WOooooooooooOoOoOoooW!!!! If I never mentioned how I friggin' LOVE your animal designs, well.. there! I admit it!! *while feeding the roc birdie some cheese and crackers* The detail and the anatomy.. well, everything all in all blows me away!! *flies out through the window* How long did you take on those feathers?? There's lots there! Love its stance and its expression... that's one pissed off flying car... xD I've... might've heard of rocs before, mbut maybe in a video game, either Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda on gameboy. They had something called a 'roc feather' allowing the user to fly? Or fall straight through the ground, I forget. xD Babbling aside, um...

...

I MUST FAVE j00!!!!

.. the drawing, I mean. xD

"Flying car"....I like it!
Thank you very very much for your very very kind comment And the admiration is entirely reciprocated for your character designs and insane detail! (*Roc eats cheese and crackers then screams for more*)
The feathers...well, they really are only loopy scribbles intended to give the impression of feathers.... But they took longer than I thought, so I'm glad you like them! (Glad you like the expression, too - that's one of my favourite bits )
Yeah, rocs have probably cropped up in a lot of places like a lot of fantasy creatures like, say, unicorns.
And thank you soooooo much for faving my little roccy-poo ^____^
(By the way, if you want feather detail, you might want to check out *rewston - now that's scary.)

....A....Karkakakaka...dan?
Um, I don't know what that is. (*loves mythology but hasn't heard that one*) My roc's standing by a dead horse What's a Karkadan?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtLover25 In reply to KatsBrain [2006-07-12 19:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh- lol.
Based on what I have heard, there is a story in which there was an account by the legendary Sinbad about the Karkadan, which he claimed was the largest and fiercest of unicorns. The only creature that dared to fight it was an elephant, and it ended up losing when the karkadan stabbed it with its horn. However, the dead elephant got stuck on its horn and the karkadan couldn't get it off. After days, it was quite tired of lugging the body around with it, and then a Roc happened to swoop down, grab both of them and ate/fed them to its young. How I love happy endings!

Oh okay. Still looks great!

Thank you very much for recounting that tale - I enjoyed it! ^___^ I've found quite often that mythology that sounds really cool when you read it sounds funny as hell when you summarise it: "The Karkadan got a dead elephant stuck on its horn and couldn't get it off."
Happy endings are wonderful

Cool
Bably elephants eh? That's pretty impressive.
It was funny; I showed it to my mum saying, "What do you think of my roc?" And she said "...It looks like a bird of prey....I see no resemblance to a rock." I think she was joking But she had never heard of a roc before; pity.

LilleKraakeLunde In reply to KatsBrain [2006-07-11 01:42:56 +0000 UTC]

That is a pity, that she'd never heard of a roc. Rocs are the main form of the Avian royalty in my roleplaying website. Every building on that planet is big enough to host a Roc comfortably (or a Dragon, but those are smaller than Rocs in general, lol). Sorry, I'm rambling on. I love this drawing, it's great.

KatsBrain In reply to LilleKraakeLunde [2006-07-11 10:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Wow hey, that's kinda cool You're not rambling on; that was very interesting! I usually think of dragons as being bigger than rocs, too, so that's another interesting view on them Which website is this?
And thank you very much for the fave!

LilleKraakeLunde In reply to KatsBrain [2006-07-11 14:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, heh, well, these Dragons are huge compared to most any other animal, but the Rocs have them beat by half, lol. Here's the link to my website, feel free to snoop around. I suggest the Information Boards first, then if you feel like joining, the Rules and Important Site Info. Thanks for your interest, and you're welcome for the fave, best drawing of a Roc I've seen in ages.

Thanks very much for the link! I will have a snoop around, but if I do join, it wouldn't be until after the holidays.
Thank you again for the lovely comment About you saying that it's the "best drawing of a Roc you've seen in ages"....I haven't seen any drawings of rocs in ages.... Alas, poor things, they are neglected.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LilleKraakeLunde In reply to KatsBrain [2006-07-11 18:41:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, they're huge, and their Nests (ENORMOUS log cabins) and other edifices are big enough for them to move around in easily, so you can imagine how intimidating that'd be to the rest of us puny mortals. Yes, Avian royalty are hatched as normal winged humanoids, but as they get older, their bodies morph into something like < a href="https://www.deviantart.com/deviation/26235040/">this along the way towards their final incarnation, which is a Roc. The rest is a tad complicated, lol, which is why you're free to check out the site, and no pressure on joining, lol, just if it tickles your fancy. We para, T1 battles, no ooc in the rp areas, no revivals of suicides, and no title charas without permission from admin.

You'r right, I haven't seen many drawings of rocs, and oddly enough, the last time I saw one, it was ALSO carrying a horse! Wish I could remember where I saw it, I'd show you.

Yeah, I was reading the species information on the site, so I think I've got a vague idea about them, though I had to go midway through my research It soudns really cool
And...I think I understood all of that except "para" and "T1" and the exact definition of "title characters". (I am VERY new to rping)

LilleKraakeLunde In reply to KatsBrain [2006-07-13 01:04:14 +0000 UTC]

Lol, it's intimidating sure, not for the faint of heart. Para= paragraph rp, as in at least five sentences per post. T1 = one of several battle styles; you'll find the rules for T1 in the site. Title charas = any royal, Lawgiver or military chara. Basically, anyone who'd have some real power in the game. We all have to learn sometime, right? Pm me or catch me in YIM sometime if you have questions.

Thank you very much! It was only meant as a quick scribble-thingy, but the squiggles-that-give-the-impression-of-feathers took a while. I did it while I was testing out a new CD one evening and finished it the following day.
