Description AU History: The circumstances of Thomas' arrival are largely unknown, most of the paperwork was lost in the Crovan's Gate Fire of 1934, and Thomas doesn't like to talk about it much, this is what we do know. Thomas was built by the LBSCR in 1915, according to him he was the original 106. At some point he was brought over by mistake. How this happened is unknown, but it is believed he was sent to Sodor in a wartime mix-up. His driver and fireman got along well with the local people and married Sudrian women. By 1920, neither one wanted to leave the Island or their beloved engine. Through an inquiry, Sir Bertram Topham Hatt found out that the LB&SCR had written off Thomas as being "lost in war service". Rather than face complications resulting from a change in their books, the LB&SCR quietly sold Thomas to the North Western Railway for a "nominal sum". It seemed the LBSCR did not want him back at the end of the war (having already built a replacement No.106). Apparently the LBSCR thought that he would be in such a state when they got him back that they would effectively be building a new one anyway! So with no real other option Sir Bertram decided to officially purchase Thomas in 1920 and hand have him repainted into NWR blue and numbered 1. Shortly after purchase, his coal bunker was experimentally extended outward, to try and increase his capacity. This only lasted till he got involved in an accident, smashing his bunker. Thomas was taken to Crovan's Gate works, where he was given a new simplified bunker design to save metals. He was even rebuilt there, and was given a new boiler, bigger wheels and a new cab.
Thomas was stationed at Vicarstown as the pilot until 1924, after an incident with some trucks, Thomas was stationed at Wellsworth to learn how to handle trucks properly from Edward. After a few weeks he came to the aid of a certain black mogul on his first day Thomas was rewarded with his own branch line to Ffarquhar, along with two coaches, Annie and Clarabelle.
Thomas has received many modifications over the years to improve his performance, the two biggest were in 1924 and in 1960 when he was given a flat running board to increase his tank size and had his whistle replaced with two 3-chime whistles (Similar in sound to that of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway's Green Goddess.)
By early 2015, Thomas was lovingly overhauled and refitted with new parts, and painted in a Special Heritage Livery (Mimicking his old LB&SCR Livery) to commemorate his Class' 100th Birthday alongside 'The Three Railway Engines' 70th Anniversary.

The namesake of the NWR's No.1: Thomas Stafford, is the son of the second manager of the ill-fated S&MR: David Stafford. When he joined the Railway in the early 1920s after serving Colonel Henry Regaby in the Great War, he was apprenticed at Crovan's Gate Works where he learnt much on becoming a well known engineer, and designer, as it was he whom built the Suspension Bridge over the River Reagh following the old bridge's collapse in 1921, & worked with the NWR's Architect, Winston Arthure into doing the Central Station at Tidmouth

(I felt that for the Main Engines of the NWR, particularly the first Eight, they should each have a special heritage livery mimicking their very first colours since the day they were built. I also felt giving each NWR Engine full names makes them feel an important part of the Railway, regardless of size, age, or appearance. For Thomas' case, I wanted the first time he was painted blue, he'd be fitted with only a bunker extension based on the LMS Jinties. Also I had the idea of him and all other blue liveried NWR Engines repainted a darker shade round 1935 same time as Henry's Rebuild, much like most other railways.)
