Had another different type of garden visitor today...a baby rattlesnake. It is in a jar on my husband's hand. Read Cait's adventure here:

This is soo cool! You get some of the most fantastic opportunities there! Another reason for me to consider moving to Cali.

lol, I think it depends on what you call an opportunity

LoneWolfPhotography In reply to kayaksailor [2009-02-17 01:55:29 +0000 UTC]

opportunity, noun: chance option, lucky occurrence, etc. I mean you seem to have a nice diversity of animals to shoot there...here it's only squirrels and birds and such unless you really seriously go hunting.

I knew what you meant and I understand! I have to admit I've been very pleased with the 'diversity' up here...(mostly)

lol...yeh, mostly. There are some, like in anything else, I could do without but you take the good with the bad.

Cute but they can be ultra-aggressive... one about this size came after me when I disturbed his rest while working in our garden... and he would not stop in his attack even though I backed off several feet.

We found seven this spring in our new home - three this size and four big 'uns! We 'relocated' the little ones and 'removed' the big ones...we've got three cats and they were all too close to the house for comfort...If they come to our notice we'll deal with them but no one is out hunting them Only one was agressive, that's the one my daughter and I had to corral but he'd been discovered by a cat so he was already peaved That sound is really disturbing in reality - I'd never heard it, live, before - *shiver*!

I've never come in contact before with a snake that was that aggressive... the fact that it was just a baby blows my mind. I am much more wary now because much of the area where we take photos is their home!!!

kayaksailor In reply to papatheo [2008-11-11 02:28:42 +0000 UTC]

The aggressive one was an adult...not the longest, but, boy was it thick! I, too, am much more aware of where I put my feet and when I'm gardening I use longhandled tools to prod around FIRST!

Those are great photos! Thanks for pointing them out. I LOVE King Snakes - I fostered one for a while once. He was the best snake ever - so docile.

You are welcome, too. I love your gallery!

OMG!!! I am not a huge fan of snakes, but his patterns are beautiful. He is so small, but I bet he can protect himself pretty well. I'm glad your husband found a new home for him elsewhere.

Since he is in a jar, did you have to take the top off to get this fantastic photo?

kayaksailor In reply to prismadragonfly [2008-06-21 05:13:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the lid is off - but I was using my 300mm lens anyway I wasn't getting anywhere near it! (I just put up another baby pic of a king and another rattler)... We relocated this rattler, too, but encouraged the king to stay around (they tend to eat rattlers - or so I've been told!

(superstitious knock knock *.*) ...

Yeah, we realized that we need to find out where the closest emergency facility is...don't even really know WHERE our doctor is - only that they're down in Folsome.... I do know where the closest fire department is

Althytrion [2008-05-25 12:45:08 +0000 UTC]

It's very beautiful - tho I'd be somewhat careful, especially on a Friday 13th! But I'm pretty sure they'll avoid rattling around in your garden as soon as they'll have accepted you as new owners of the yard, since most snake species are rather shy and don't like biped observers all the day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to Althytrion [2008-05-26 02:35:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, all the actual work is done - just the maintenance now...pruning and watering so hopefully that's still enough activity to encourage them to slither elsewhere!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Althytrion In reply to kayaksailor [2008-05-26 07:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, fortunately they don't like any disturbance.

BTW there is only a small number of fatal snakebites in the States, I remember 10 p.a. out of 7000 caused by venomous species.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to Althytrion [2008-05-26 18:53:50 +0000 UTC]

Let's talk to the family members of those that were fatal!!! But really, I know the diamond back is a dangerous creature but it is not an aggressive one...it took a lot of proding and annoying by my husband (trying to grab it or pick it up to put in the trashcan for security) for it to even strike!

'Though we did decide we'd better learn where the nearest emergancy medical facitity is...our doctor is about 20 miles away...

I'm not too keen on it either, but the alternative is not to have a garden...they live here (in the area) and hopefully will soon recognize that we live here now (the house was empty for about a year) and will move on!
