Description My husband saw the cat go tearing across the driveway being chased by something this morning...he followed and found this darling fox sitting and watching without an appearant care in the world (our cat was tree'd and the fox was just keeping an eye on her!)

We later heard growling and scrabbling near our tool/garden shed and we found BABIES! We now know what's been making the noise out by Cait's new room

The cat had probably been nosing around the den and mama was chasing her away!

There are three, we think...We will keep our distance but, oh, we hope to get pictures!!!!

I wandered in your fox gallery - how lucky for you to get to be so close to one! I am very jelouse I wish "ours" had decided to stay around longer, but research has taught us mama moves them often once they're truely mobile. Our garden is "deer fenced" so we thought she'd find it safe But maybe she'll be back next spring - my husband is torn about filling in the space under the shed - we really don't want skunks to move in...

I was very lucky, the fox was sitting in the middle of the road.
A tiny road in the mountains of France, he stayed for a long time, it was very quiet! it is unexpected!

I don't think that the fox was wanting to eat the cat...I think (hope) that she was just wanting our cat to get away from her babies! It seems that maybe she's moved them - no signs or sounds from the little ones today

She may not have moved them after all...there were 'fresh' feathers under the shed this morning! Maybe they were all laying low out of the heavy wind yesterday - none of us (even the cats) were out much in it!!!

Your warning came too late...I went out to turn on the sprinklers (around behind the garage over near the fox shed) thought about grabbing my camera - should have: mama was right there just sitting and looking at me, calm as could be...I spoke softly to her, backed up and went and got my camera but of course by the time I got back she'd moved further away! I got one shot off before she melted into the brush. But at least she didn't bolt immediately - maybe that means she's recognizing that we're not a threat!

LCAisling In reply to kayaksailor [2008-05-29 05:49:07 +0000 UTC]

We took your suggestion! But then we left again and this time took the cameras with us! I think it is time to get him one of his own

(He did find an old one and get more pics of the babies out playing - I'm letting my daughter keep the "fox blog" so you'll have to watch her to see them when she gets around to getting them up! )

Yea, Panya was tree'd in the one tree that comes up and over our back deck, so she just climbed up and came inside The funny part was just yesterday I'd gotten her attention while she was on the ground and I was up on the deck and tried to get her to climb up...she looked at me, looked the tree up and down wandered around a bit (you could see her thinking about the way up...)but it was too much work - yesterday but not today!!!

Very cool. Hope you get pics of the little ones I have pictures of one from years ago at my mom's that had climbed into a fig tree to munch a bit, and another from one of the Channel Islands. Be super careful not to leave any cat food outside.

kayaksailor In reply to ParadigmParadox [2008-05-21 06:19:59 +0000 UTC]

and we were thinking of leaving a plate out to see if we could lure mama and maybe a baby out!!! Over by the shed of course...

ParadigmParadox In reply to kayaksailor [2008-05-21 06:42:25 +0000 UTC]

Just remember that foxes climb too...
As I said, I found the first one up "in" my mom's fig tree. And once they have been fed, they beg almost as insistently as a dog used to scraps from a dinner table. If you put out a fig, at least that is something the cats are not attracted to, so you are not putting the cat at any greater risk, but I wouldn't put anything out, except maybe water, which would bring all kinds of creatures closer.
