Description Isn't he handsome in his formal attire? He liked the water I'd put out for the blue birds, too, and frightened them away! Just a bit of a bully...

I really wish we had these guys in the Northeast . Wonderful portrait of such a beautiful bird Ruth! A little while ago I was birdwatching/photographing with my mom and we came upon the elusive pileated woodpecker, a first ever sighting for me, and I've been birdwatching since I was a little kid. They're not rare or anything, but ridiculously reclusive! - [link]

I am really surprised to hear that you don't have them They've been everywhere I've ever lived so it's hard to imagine them not being there! They are such characters

We've got the larger red flickers (they're pretty shy) and the cute little sapsuckers [link] which were new to me...I know the piliated are around here - my daughter and I volunteer feeding abandoned baby birds and there ware several last summer - but I don't think I've seen an adult what a great sight for you! I think we have the hairy woodpeckers, too, but I'm not sure...

I'm a big ass bird nerd...like..obsessed hahah, so I strangely know about birds that aren't anywhere near me as well as my local species Here's a site that shows the range of the acorn woodie (if you scroll down) [link] and there are actually only a few places in the country where they live!

Here we have downy woopeckers, hairy woodpeckers, flickers, pileated woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers and red headed woodpeckers . My parents house in New Jersey has aluminum siding that looks like wood, and the flickers try and peck at it!!!

lol! I faved that site! (When I was a kid I thought I wanted to go to Cornell and become an ornothologist but that was before I learned that spelling matters ) How lucky you are to have so many kinds!!

I learned a few details about the Acorns The story about them putting almost 500 pounds of acorns into the water tower reminds me of our home! We had it inspected and the guy found gallons of acorns up in the attic - the birds had pecked through the fiberboard siding and were putting the nuts into the attic. We had lots of damage to be repaired - in fact we completely replaced three sides of the siding...there were so many nuts that came pouring out whenever a piece of trim was removed! A few bats flew out too We replaced it with a cement sideing - they still try but not too hard! For the first few months I'd think someone was knocking on our door - I knew I'd gotten used to them when I went to the window to scare them off and saw the UPS truck in the driveway...someone WAS knocking on my door

[link] Indeed we do

we kept this little one from being snack food, we hope... have a sort of problem - we've got three cats whom we adore so I don't put up seed feeders so I'm not making a kitty buffet - we've only got hummingbird feeders.

These are always beautiful. One time while taking a hike, and we encountered one of these. I put my hand on the tree;it felt like the tree had a heartbeat!

we have too many of these handsome birds around! I love their look and family chatter but they keep trying to make our house walls into storage containers!!! We had to replace three outside walls with new siding made out of concrete...I even mistook the FedEx delivery guy knocking on the door for a woodpecker pounding

He's a pain but fun...they live in family groups and it's enjoyable to watch them swoop around between the trees and the telephone poles - "talking" to each other

How close where you? Can not be that far with a 270 mm

10-15 feet? I'm bad with guessing distances but he's in the branches of the oaktree that hangs over the deck so he's quite close...

We're trying to discourage them from hanging around the house - they're still trying to hide their acorns in the walls but I do enjoy them in the tree

I had that problem when I lived in the woods. My wife at the time worked steady midnights and slept all day....well, I mean she tried to

they do tend to be alarm clocks for us, too! Not so bad now that the sun comes up around 8 but it was the pits when they'd start pounding at about 5 Since we put up the 'hardy board' siding they've not been as numerous but habit is a hard thing to break!
