Description Had a handful of turkey vultures in my yard today...they weren't too happy with my checking up on them

I find them very hard to catch for a good photo.  They're very wary creatures.

They are!  They occasionally stand, one per fencepost, in the winter with their wings open doing a bit of solar heating - would love to get a shot of them but they never let me

They used to have been so hunted here in the South (people thought that they killed their young livestock) that I rarely saw them here when I was a child.  It was quite a novelty to catch a glimpse of one riding the thermals.  But they were put on the endangered list here and it was made illegal to kill them.  We see them everywhere now.  Impressive birds, but still very, very nervous of people.

sigh.  people are so stupid about what "kills" their livestock...glad they've made a recovery!

They're so dang black that usually don't get to see any details - lucky angle of the sun

thanks David, I kept the camera trained on them 'cuz I just knew they wouldn't stick on the ground for long...
