Description A vulture warms itself on one of the oak trees in my yard...with the leaves gone larger birds have been taking advantage of the roosts.

And possibly because the red-shoulder hawk (below) has been hanging around, the woodpeckers, who usually dominate the smaller birds and harass the larger, have been conspicuous with their absence!

they are pretty awesome! We occasionally get a whole squadron circling back and forth over the house (we live on the edge of a ridge and they catch the thermals by us )

I got circled by one as I was waiting for the bus last year. They hang out by the river bed and the freeway. So do the hawks, but it is kind of weird seeing the vultures circle the elderly apartments O_o

LOL! You try sticking your head into slimy dead things and see how you look Really, Nature was pretty ingenious...a bald head is easier to clean and doesn't get all glopped up with guts like feathers would!!

When I was 8 and my little brother had just turned 5. National Geographic ran a TV special on vultures and buzzards. I knew those people where lying to me and that nothing could be that ugly.

Sooooo, I talk my little into a grand adventure, The next time we spent the night out on the families west Texas ranch my little brother and I got up before every one else and went to one of the lakes one the ranch.

This was a 5-mile walk from the bunkhouse. I loaded my little brother up with a 5 lds. Silage hammer, rope, stakes and lunch. I carried my precious camera. (It was just one of those point and shoot things but it was all I had.)

When we got to the lake we drove 4 stacks into the ground for our buzzard tarp. We than measured out 4 lengths of rope and tied them to the stacks. It was at this time that my little brother ask for the first time what we were using for buzzard bate.

I tackled him and had the first hand tie before he knew what hit him the second hand was not as easy but I got it tied rather quickly. He manage to kick the snot out of me and bloodied my nose before I got the first foot done up. I just could not get a hand on the last leg as he continued to try to kick my brains out.

About this time my mother came over the top of the dam in the families 1959 Nash Rambler Ambassador Station Wagon, look for her two wayward sons. I left my little brother trashing on the ground and I ran to stop her from scaring off the buzzards, my little brother was doing a good enough job at that with out mom showing up.

She saw her eldest child running and waving his arms in near panic and her youngest child trashing around on the ground and came on in a hurry.

When all was explained, my little brother was coddled and love and I had a hard time walking and an even harder time sitting down. My little brother will not go hiking with me to this very day.

Moving on to plan “B” I did get my buzzard photos by building a blind out of brush over a chair and leaving dead thing there for moths before I got my shot.

You were SUCH a pesky brother!!! I don't blame him for not trusting you I never cease being amazed when thinking back to the 'stuff' we did and places we went as kids that I'd never in a million years let my daughter do Sad, that loss of freedom...

My parents had a Rambler wagon, too! Probably about the same vintage - we brought it from Connecticut to California in '61 when I was 3.
