Description A lot of hard work, but definitely exciting trying to make a new character. The design is not set 100% yet, but I like what happening a lot so far. (:

As for the character himself, I believe he would live a solitary life in a cold, icy climate, at a very high altitude in the mountains. Where ever he travels, he brings the ice fog from which he gets his name (pogonip).

*RickGriffin summed it up best: wolf + ram + yeti XD

It looking good so far.

The tail and the ears are distracting for me.
I can't see any ear holes, plus it is very inconvenient to have tall ears in a cold enviroment anyways.
Can you imagine how painful it gets when the bitter cold and ice wind hits those furless ears?

Also in my opinion putting a armour would be a real killjoy for this one.
You can always create a warrior class and the native ferals (the one depicted above).

I'm already planning to remove the tail, I've gotten a lot of feedback on it over the past month from teachers and other students, to the point where I'm embarrassed that I thought it would be a good idea. I think I'm just going to cut it off entirely and do something docked similar to what a polar bear may have, or just use a wolf-ish tail instead.

Really great point about the ears. I like the design, but they could not function in the cold very well. I'll have to give him smaller and different ears. I'll have to try and integrate the blue spike design into either a fur pattern or another set of horns.

Also, another great idea, that split between classes. I'll be leaving the armor off. Thanks a lot for the great input LPhela.

Never ever get embarrased for any ideas you thought up, you hear!
Always be proud of your own creativity and originality which you have in spades!
Naturally it is also wise not to be stubborn.

You could do a snow fox tail instead.

It could work if you added a lot of thick fur to the ears or simply change the habitat to a bit warmer climate.
Then you don't have to do any major remodelling.

You could watch nature documentaries to know how animals in any habitat, niche etc. looks likes.
As one biologist said, if something (a organ, a feature, shape etc.) is there and evolution didn't remove it, it is because it always has a purpose, wether we know or not know the reason.
Animals and other lifeforms never looks like that just for the fun, it is always helpful in one way or the other.

Excellent, it would be a shame to cover up all that wonderful fur you have made with armour.
With different classes it is possible to design a unique design & look for each class without losing the original design in any of them.

You are most welcome!^_^
I am happy to put my 2 cents in.

You are absolutely right.

And definitely, I enjoy watching a lot of nature documentaries, I think I've seen planet earth and blue planet at least 10 times each. I've also begun collecting and reading issues of national geographic and other books on animals. It has been really helpful, but I require a huge amount more of study.

Thanks for that whole comment, I think it's one of the best I ever received in the 4 years I've been on dA.

Yeah, but you can mix fun with study.
Works better for learning as well.
U
nderstanding nature completely is nigh impossible to do in one lifetime.
There is so much to discover and to learn from.

Wowie, gosh.
I am honoured.

Haha, it totally does look like a Pachirisu tail. I agree though (I thought you might pick that out) I'm still not set on the tail myself. I want to try a sharper edged shape, with angles and less fluffy roundness. I was actually thinking about just going dragon tail with sharp blue fins/spikes but I'm still not sure. /: Still I'm pleased that some people actually like this tail, I thought it was going to get shot down 100%. d: Still unsure though, we'll see, kinda want to add armor myself. d:

Ooooo. Looks cool. Where did you come up with the combo? Haha it's such an odd combo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KE-M72 In reply to sergeiofrussia [2011-02-20 15:58:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah, probably the oddest combo I've ever made. It didn't help that I was watching my friend play Bayonetta at the time (lol you want odd combos, that's the game for you, it's so awesome XDDDDDD).

Anyway, the design was directed by the want of cool looking shapes (lots of triangles cause they are super cool) and an ice theme (animals that tend to thrive in the cold). The ram/clydesdale hooves and polar bear/gorilla arms both fit the the triangular and ice theme. The tail itself mimics the shape of the ram horns and all the blue marks wrap or point in a similar fashion. The end result is this, which rick managed to sum up so eloquently: wolf + ram + yeti. (:

sergeiofrussia In reply to KE-M72 [2011-02-22 00:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Damn. I've never played Bayonetta so I wouldn't know. Haha.

Why are triangles super cool, and why the ice theme?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KE-M72 In reply to sergeiofrussia [2011-02-22 00:41:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure there is some philosophical ideal of triangles and stuff, like how in many older compositions the triangle is used to represent holy/spiritual subjects like the Holy Trinity. Triangles are also kinda of a threatening shape (similar to a knife, sword, shards of glass, or a spearhead).

I mostly used them because I think they just look cool though, pleasing to my eyes and very dynamic in form. d:

I built the character around the name Pogonip (which is another name for ice fog) instead of building a character and have to find a name/theme for him.

Lmao you sound like such an art student talking about triangles being "dynamic in form." I'm so proud

That's cool how you did the name. I actually thought you wrote "ice frog" for a second, though, and was like "oh my god thats so cool." Haha. It's still cool though

Ummmm. When did you get so amazing at Photoshop? Seriously. Can I have your skills?

Like... how did you even start this? How do you know where to shade? How did you get this good so fast? I have so many questions. O _____ o

KE-M72 In reply to lycanthropeful [2011-02-20 13:38:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but I have to do better next time.

I started with a pencil drawing [link] where most of the anatomy is worked out and took a picture of it with my camera and sent it into photoshop. I went into the painting part not having a solid idea of what I wanted, so most of it was trial and error and not planned out. I try to make every mark count, and be purposeful with all my decisions. I roughly set a light source (that black arrow on the left side of the page) and blocked in the basic color and value I thought was correct, trying to remember what the light looks like from figure drawing class. [link] The color follows the basic properties of light, warm yellowish light create bluish shadows. Also, tried to move colors in the light to be more saturated as well as move the hue accordingly (examble: the blue in the patterns go from a dark, almost purple blue, to a true blue, to almost a teal color).

The big thing is that I treat this like a normal traditional painting. Only painting on one layer and not being afraid to change and mess things up. I try not to confine myself to the pencil drawing (which is more of a coloring book approach as apposed to a painting approach). I know in my mind, everything is changeable, nothing is set, so that I don't get scared to make a move. I also attempted integrate the texture brushes I usually use more subtly, and tried painting more directly instead of in my normal "wash/glazing" manner.

In retrospect, if it had to be done on a tight deadline, it probably would have been much more efficient to work out the lighting, color, and design first in thumbnail form so that way you are not trying to design and render things at the same time. However, I like this way when time is not a concern because it lends a bit of spontaneity to the piece.

I certainly don't feel like I'm getting good that fast, it's slow but steady progress from practicing everyday. School has me painting and drawing from life and study everyday. In my down time I draw or research on color, anatomy, theory, landscapes, animals, other artists ect. I fail a lot, and get frustrated and angry a lot. This stuff certainly isn't easy for me, it's hard work that requires me to be more disciplined in many ways to keep progressing forward as an artist. I still have a long LONG way to go and there is so much I don't know.

Hope that was helpful and didn't confuse you in any way.

lycanthropeful In reply to KE-M72 [2011-02-20 19:29:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank for that run-down.

I'm particularly excited that you mentioned to design first in thumbnail form so that way you are not trying to design and render things at the same time. I need to learn that! I always start out with a set canvas and then try to make things fit... that's stupid considering you can always increase or decrease the size when you're painting in Photoshop. That's nice inspiration to not lock myself in so much.

Even if you don't feel like you've improved, you definitely have. You're obviously gleaning something from your education. Keep working hard! Thanks for explaining your work process.
