5. Draw or write about the esk you feel the closest to
"Curiosity is what it looks like when you're in love with the world." - Mira Grant, Symbiont
To be completely honest, Quirk's conception was somewhat utilitarian--with Eft being largely asocial and unfriendly, and the other esk concepts I had on the backburner being variously withdrawn, caustic, or simply too trespasser-y for their own good, I wanted an esk who would be friendly, easy to draw, and happy enough to perform transformations freely so that I would have an esk who could easily make more esk, both for my own ideas and for TF trades. That and founding their design on something of a self-indulgent gimmick (the galls) made me a little nervous that I wouldn't really connect to them as a character.
That fear ended up being completely unfounded! Quirk isn't quite a self-insert, but placing it in an environment I was so familiar with, with a nature feature I connect to dearly, and a community familiar that gets to personify my special interest in galls (and my adoration of and identification with bugs as a whole) means that it has been very easy to attach myself to it and see myself in it--it is quite literally the closest esk to me in spatial terms. I can take just about any experience I have in my environment and offer it to Quirk, and it may not approach it the same way I do, but it does approach it with the same enthusiasm, and having a creative outlet for expressing how much I love my home has been a lot of fun.
Also it's just very damn cute.
I had a different plan for this piece that was more crafty, but the heat wave slamming California at the moment (and for the next, uhm, week) have made gathering the necessary materials for that project much less attractive haha. I'll execute that plan at a later date, but for now, here's just a simple Quirk.
