When you have something simple to say, say it in black and white so everyone gets the hint.Art. Wow. What a subject. How many times have you been flamed because someone didn't like your style? How many times have you recieved a comment about how you must have no skill as an artist because some troll thinks you suck?
Well shit, if I had a nickel...lol
ART IS A MATTER OF OPINION PEEPLEZ! For reelzerz. You can't just go up to somebody and say their work sucks. We all have our own styles, our own likes, our own dislikes. I remember when I first got into GFX design for forum skins/buttons/markers I was in awe of the stuff people could do. As I started to practice, I found certain things I liked and didn't like. Like the bright neon-highlighted skins. I hate 'em. Black and lime green do not mix. In my opinion. lol, Just because I think that way, doesn't mean the artist does.
Same goes for my GFX that I put together. I can't tell you how many replies I got with people saying my stock sucked, the colors didn't meld, the text wasn't right, or they just didn't like the text altogether. These aren't crits, they are opinions! No one said a damn thing to help me with my art, they just stuffed their opinions down my throat and said I sucked because I didn't like what they liked.
Well, shame on me for not wanting to be like everyone else. lol
People like different things. From fetish portraits, to abstract schemes, 3D renders and pencil sketches. We all have our opinions on how things should be done, but in the long run, most of it should be kept to ourselves. We're not helping anyone by telling them (based on our opinion) that they suck at art, because they don't. They just have the guts to do what they like, and say fuck the rest of the world.

what art you like is subjective. quality is objective. you can't compare amazing art to very poor art.

Art is a method of expressing yourself to others, otherwise there's no point in showing it to anyone else (in much the same way, randomly bashing the keyboard might express your anger, but won't help anyone else understand that you're angry). Whether you succeed is up to them, not you, so their opinions matter more than yours does. Also, given that humans, you know, work in specific ways, there are still rules that you should understand the reasoning for before you try to break them (eg colour theory, perspective).

Too true, that's what I tell myself when I get an uncalled for crappy mark in art. I say "this drawing was awesome, I put a lot of work into it and I didn't deserve that mark. It was a matter of opinion, not my artistic worth"

THANK YOU! I agree that's why I never bothered with art classes. Because apparently my style was 'wrong'. And what's the point of being like everyone else? If everyone was the same than there wouldn't be any good art now would there?

This is a really good stamp!
I watch some people on Deviantart and I see how their drawing style changes. And sometimes I think their old style was better(because it fits my taste, of course!). I would be really sad if they just changed it because some jerk had to complain about it. And we all now that stickmans are not really art and but some picture are described to be "bad" although they are just different.

I agree that art can be interpreted in many different ways, but I do not agree that everything is art. There is still good art and bad art. The argument that everything is art is just a cheap copout to submit horrible art.

This stamp really strikes home with me. I pretty much failed an art class because I couldn't "draw the right way". It bothered me a lot because I always though art was relative... not static.
