Oh my gosh, I remember seeing this in the book and thinking the Huxley was just about the ugliest thing ever. And I also had no idea what gender Deryn was, because I'd just been looking at the beautiful art at the time. Looking back I think the art is why I read the book in the first place, and the absolute least I can say about the Huxley now is that it's remarkable. Fascinating. Downright awesome.

Wonderful art work, it really helped the imagery of the book (go figure right?).
Well I guess I should say it gave it more depth to the imagery of the book and it made the story really come alive.
I do have to say that one of my favorite plates (besides this one) was when Deryn was grabbing someone's potato while sketching the tubes for the talking lizards.
So wonderful work! I cannot wait for the next book this October to see you and Mr. Westerfeld bring more life to this series.

I remember when I first got the book and was almost repelled by the fact that it had illustrations. But as I read on, I found that they were not only helpful in imagining what was taking place through the words on the pages, but the artwork and style of the illustrations were so allurring, I'd spend more time studying them than actually reading the book! So, in other words, it's amazing!

Somehow, most of your drawings have an "organic" quality, like they're made with flesh instead of ink. I really like that.
