I usually fake a bit more than I should for backgrounds. 
This one I was trying to fill the bg as much as possible, as to have it as more of an emphasis enveloping Sonja here.

perspective is key, and whether it is a city, forrest or cave making sure to build the foreground, midground, and far background.
