Description While unpacking from my recent move, I have stumbled across some more work I had tucked away. I was going to put this in my sketch section, but just wanted to change up my deviation page.

This is truly a sketch, and came from one of the rare sketchbooks I tried maintaining. (I tend to always draw on loose sheets of paper.) This was about an hours worth of work, standard soft lead and mechanical pencils.

i've gone through your entire gallery..and i'd love to comment all of them..and i will as i get more time to do so..

But i like this one best..i know from viewing some other drawings by you that you've got a sort of obsession with drawing detailed hair..and that is the biggest reason i like this...and the contrasting shadows on the face..

i like everything about this drawing "Sketch" as you call it..its simply gorgeous

oh this is just lovely!to call it a 'sketch' makes me shiver! my stuff are sketches in comparison! what a lovely portrait, i love the way it just trails off and you've used such strong contrasts...its a very subtle yet bold image

truly inspirational

Thanks for the kind words. I guess I use the word sketch when I work in Pencil, and this in fact was one of the rare times I working in an actual sketch book. Maybe that influenced me in calling it a sketch.

hehe, its great - i want to do something more like this myself...probably to prove to myself I can draw without a mouse haha!

I just started drawing with a mouse myself. I do not know if that is really a good thing for me seeing as I already spend abuot 10 hours a day in front of this machine for work. Traditiional art would be a nice break, but I am having fun painting with my tablet!

I was going through your gallery and decided that I couldn't egress without leaving a comment. Any of the pieces you have included would merit praise, but I chose this one because, well, I guess I really like monochrome!

I enjoy the way that you portray hair, not just on this work but on all of your images in general. Just structured enough to give it shape and flow, yet organic in it's feel.

My favorite part of Kara has to be the area around the nose and mouth. You have really captured the planes of the face as the shadow curves around the left side of the mouth and spills out over the chin. Also, that one stray strand of hair that comes from the left temple, crosses the nose, and leads the eye back over the left cheek! Very nice.

I also like the way that you rendered the shadows in general. Not a flat black, but one that has depth, allowing for a little reflected light to be cast around a bit. Thanks for sharing it! Looks like a favorite to me!

I am glad you like Kara, and found so many points of interest. I love working in pencil, and if the world was a different place I would probably spend most of my time working with it. It has always been my first love, but now life, and work seem to keep me from her.

I have always loved hair, and it is the single most enjoyable element for me in my work. The part that I feel is for me to simply get lost in. It captivates me as I work. I believe each strand has an expression all to itself, and each strand has something to say. Either that or I am as loopy as people say I am.

I do not know if this always comes across in my work, but I approach my drawings, and paintings from a sculptural point of view. Maybe it has to do with the plaster casts I used to work from in anatomy class, or more recently with the 3D software I experiment with for work. It is probably both.

Shadows... They can never be flat. They need depth so that mystery and intrigue have a place to call home!

Thank you so much for looking at my work. The Fav on Kara, and taking the time to share so many of your thoughts with me. I really appreciate it.
