What would I do without the morphing tool? That's the first thing I miss when in DS. ^^

Do you mind me asking how long it took to render?? Lux gives me great results, but depending on the lighting can take AGES to run (I average 24 hours per render). I haven't played with the new iRay in DAZ yet, but that's up next

This took almost 5 minutes in Octane, running on my old GTX580. I bet I could cut this time in half if I had a modern video card, like the new GTX980 Ti. Rendering times depend a LOT on how we set up the scenes, especially the materials. Depending on what kinds of materials and lights we use, it might be faster to render using a different kernels, like PMC for scenes with lots of transparencies and/or caustics, and Direct Light for scenes with few lights and simple materials. This scene was rendered with the default Path Tracing kernel, which is good for most kinds of renders. ^^

I fell in love with Octane because it was the *only* existing pure GPU rendering solution when it was released. Other programs, like Lux renderer, use a combination of GPU and CPU, which always tends to be slower. Nowadays there are other GPU renderers, like Cycles, V-Ray RT, and i-Ray, but by now Octane has established itself, becoming one of the most popular GPU renderer in the industry. An article I've read at CG Society last month kinda confirmed this, where they showed how Octane has also been used extensively in the game and movie productions.
It wasn't cheap, but I think it's the best thing available. Sounds like version 3 is coming out later this year, and it will support any video card, as opposed to only nVidia ones like it is now. ^^

Nvidia's i-ray is 100% free, and now ships by default with DS4.8. I have played with it, but it's not [by far] as fast or versatile as Octane. In either case, you can have i-ray for free, so no complains on that side! LOL

Thank you for all that information. Is Octane good for editing textures? Or is it something completely different? I really want to make some very simple monster girl textures, but I have no idea how UV's work.

Octane is a 3D rendering engine, it cannot edit textures. I have painted the stripes texture in PaintShop using Dawn's UV templates. Instead of painting directly over an existing texture, I have created an overlay map that I can apply over other textures. This is called texture overlay, which requires working with shader nodes. This can be done in programs that support overlay, like 3DSMAX, the Poser material room and Octane renderer. ^^

Alright then. So you just used a image editor to make the stripes a like a layer to put over other textures? How did you know where to put the stripes? I don't understand UV maps. I'm trying to make textures for Genesis 2 Female.

Overlays are applied over the body textures, but you have to use a "multiply node", so it won't work on the DS4 materials tab. It has to be done in the brand new "Shader Mixer", where you have to locate each body part that has a diffuse skin texture applied, and multiply it by your stripes overlay map. Shader Mixer is brand new in DS4, so I don't know how it works yet, but I do know that's where this has to be done. In Poser it's done in the "Material Room" in advanced mode. Octane only works with shader nodes, so overlays are supported straight away.
You will use the provided texture templates (UV maps) to paint your textures and overlay maps. You can think of these templates as an "unfolded" version of your model, so you know where each part of the textures should be placed over the body. Nowadays it is possible to paint textures directly over your models without having to use UV templates. For example, Photoshop CS6 and CC versions both support painting right over 3D models. My stripes overlays maps were painted directly over the model (Dawn OBJ) in ZBrush using the built-in GoZ plugin, which is available for both Poser and DS.

Okay I have ZBrush but don't know how to use it really, Did you just export your model with no clothes / hair as an .OBJ and bring it into ZBrush? Are there tutorials for this?
Sorry for asking so many questions.

ken1171 In reply to Tiny-GTS-Lover [2015-06-18 02:27:11 +0000 UTC]
If all you want is to paint textures, you only need to load the base figure OBJ and nothing else. If you are doing this from Poser or DAZ Studio, you can use the GoZ plugin to bridge the models directly into ZBrush. There are many ZBrush tutorials at the Pixologic website, and also at YouTube. ^^
