I usually use a custom brush. hardness at about 50% opacity at about 40% to start. shape dynamics set to pen pressure. I feel like they are often too "Soft" looking, so I am trying a slightly harder brush.

Yeah, you don't want to be endlessly scratching at the wacom. But using textured brushes are a great way to get rid of that soft/smooth look I think you're talking about.

I think harder edges will accomplish what i want to look different.
