Well, a large universe is just a bunch of stars that are pretty much everywhere. A nebula can be shaped into whatever form you like. And placing a planet near or inside one lets both the artist and viewer concentrate on what's important. That's just my observation/opinion. BTW if you haven't seen it yet check out Hubble's pic of the nebula NGC 1999 or "The Keyhole Nebula". When I first saw this I fell on my ass. ;D
