Spite can most definitely be the best starting motivation for anything, there was little argument about that.
Again, it is worth mentioning that Poseidon was a unique god in the pantheon. While other deities use their hands, eyes and / or their symbols of power to channel most of their magic - Palutena and Medusa their staffs, Hades his hands and cape, Zeus his twelve orbs of lightning, etc. - Poseidon almost exclusively uses his legs in a battle. He could use anything else, for example the Trident he had won from a rival sea god, but he usually just doesn't. The reason behind his fighting style is incredibly simple, stupidly stubborn yet also admirable, all at the same time.
He learnt it just to spite his father.
When Zeus had managed to force the monster god Kronos to vomit out his older brothers, the young storm god had unfortunately not expected for his father to recover this fast. The three young gods, two of them completely disoriented, were chased across the whole length of the Time Fortress (numbering in the kilometers, given Kronos' massive size) and this insane cat-and-mouse game had almost ended in Kronos biting off Poseidon's right leg. By some miracle, Hades and Zeus had managed to free Poseidon without losing the limb, but the sea god carries the scars of that encounter to this day.
During the hundred years of the Godwar, Poseidon, who really really goddamn hates his father, taught himself to fight with kicks, simply to prove Kronos that his assault achieved absolutely nothing.
Hey if it works, it works!
Again, you don't mess with any of the Core Trio, but especially not with Poseidon.

Quick sketches for combating my artblock induced by finishing a massive project, practicing more extreme poses and water magic bullshit effects. Also some KIU worldbuilding. Ever since I first imagined Poseidon actually fighting, for some reason I always pictured him doing insane shit with his legs. So I said screw it, and rolled with this stubborn idea. Enjoy
With a bit of luck and work, I can start working on a commission I had lined up tomorrow or on Sunday!
Fun fact: Poseidon wears a ring on his right foot, and nothing on the left one. Hence my choice for that leg to be the scarred one under those white pants.
