Description

Just a quick update and proof that I am indeed still working on DuatStories in the background. Last week I had a three-day long writer's course, and during the lectures I've sketched an absolute metric fuckton of possible design ideas. The best are here.

So, what's all this bullshit, you may ask. Let's go from upper left corner to the right, alright?

  • Sha: otherwise known as the Seth-animal, it is an unknown canine creature (probably a composite) that was most used as Seth's symbol. So much so that words such as "storm", "disaster" and "terror" are chuck-full of these Shas when written in hieroglyphs.
  • Egyptian Griffin: feline body and hawk head with a short neck. Griffins were sometimes depicted as guardian creatures, other times they were symbols for the pharaoh himself as he trampled his enemies into the ground (often symbolized as hideous creatures themselves). It is a fitting form for Ra, I believe.
  • Anat & Astarte head design: Both Anat and Astarte were foreign fearsome goddesses of war who were adopted by the Egyptian pantheon. They were often depicted as consorts to Seth during the Contendings. In DuatStories they are planned to be giant cobra demon twin sisters who will eventually become the most loyal of Seth's demons.
  • Bes: dwarf god of protection against demons, one of the most popular god of the common people. His characteristically goofy appearance cannot be mistaken for anything else.
  • Geb & Nut v2 designs: after the shit basic version 1 designs, I wanted to go back to the drawing board. Geb may very well remain unchanged, but Nut needed some serious overhaul. So I played around with her massive hair.
  • Mehen: protector snake demon of Ra during the nightly journey, and also the name of a popular board game based on the same creature. Mehen already has a v1 design, but it isss.... a rather poorly executed one, so back to the drawing board it is with him!
  • Bennu birds: Bennus were the Egyptian phoenixes, often associated with creator deities such as Atum or Ra. Originally bennus had been based on the yellow wagtails, later they became the more well-known great herons. In DuatStories, I intend to keep both of these versions, for different purposes
  • Ant & Abtu: twin pilot fish demons who guided Ra's night boat through the River of Night. In DuatStories they will... be a bbbit different
  • Tefnut head design: Goddes of Rain and Moisture, she was a hard one to nail down. After some trial and error, I settled for an idea with lots of raindrop and cloud motifs. It will be interesting to see what I can get out of that.
  • Mesektet: Ra's nightly solar barque. It has other names as well, such as Semektet and Sektet. In DuatStories it will be a sentient vehicle. It is aggressive, small but very maneuverable and armored.
  • Mandjet: Ra's daily solar barque. It is also known as Madjet, Atet or Matet. In DuatStories Mandjet was originally the sentient barque of the pharaoh but it will leave its post for... reasons. It is bigger, slower and calmer than Mesektet.

So there you have it. I hope I can flash all of these sketches out better some time later. One of them is already in the works!

Alright, that's it for now! Take care!
